750 sq ft does not sound that small for one person and you are right. It is wonderful not having a mortgage and also having small electric and heat bills! I say good for you. It really is amazing what little a person really needs and how easily it can be obtained. But, debt is always out there begging. Just look at the ads. It really burns me when they are trying to sell things for "x dollars per month." If I'm buying, it is something material like; not debt for sure. I hear of some who only have a "little debt." That is something like being a little bit pregnant.
Just a quick thanks to those of you that don't think I am crazy for living in my small "Shack". It's about efficient living for me and keeping expenses low so I can retire sooner rather than later. Best of all, is that I am very Happy and Proud of my place. Some people I know poked fun at me when they saw I was building small...they stopped laughing when I asked how much they paid in mortgage interest and property taxes, these same people I suspect are living pay check to pay check and pretty lean at that given two incomes. Last year I finally had to replace my car when the sub frame rotted out, it was a 1997 and made it to 2017 without any major repairs!, she was getting pretty ugly though, But I would have kept her if she would have passed inspection...replaced her with a used 2015 so I should be set til 2035 now?
I have a design for one!! Single guys less than a thousand square feet no problem Add wife and daughters you need a 1 or 2 before that 750.. When single with 2 boys electric was $75.. Add hair dryers straighteners etc etc it will double TRUST me.
I will happily sit in the dark if I am home alone. Wife will come in and give me crap about it. Why do I need to get up and turn every damm light in the house on when it gets dark, when I'm just sitting messing around on the computer or tv? I am confident that with central AC my electric bill for me alone would be under $100 a month. It's over double that with the women.

Way to be frugal shack! Good for you. I’m with ya on the big house / big mortgage. They’re all over the place around here, with quite a few repos to boot. Nothing like living above your means huh? Aw, why worry, there’s always bankruptcy right? I’ve seen it too many times, and even in my own extended family. It’s disgusting
shack don't worry about what other people think! They don't pay your bills! At these people think the house needs to be bigger, when their kids move out. And it's just the two older retired people, who the heck wants to clean a 3000 square foot house for just two people or in your case one person!! You are wise in my Book!! Its your life, Make you HAPPY!!
I don't worry about what they think at all! My close friends get it and think what I have is awesome. Always 'love' to hear other's tell me how much money I must have and tell me how to spend it...Just an average guy whose frugal...although I do have a car payment, I couldn't pass up 0.9% on a used car and it's the only monthly bill besides cell phone and electric. Like I said before, I have no idea what the future will bring and I really want to retire with no debt and some peace of mind with finances....and most importantly I hope to have good health.
