Kevin in Ohio that is one awesome unit.
You did a heck of a job creating that, I bookmarked your build log to finish reading later.

Thanks for the kind words. I always enjoy making things and taking the time and forethought to make it into a useful, long lasting piece of equipment.

That's a heck of a machine there! Looks like you have the process down pat for those large rounds. Hydraulic stabilizers, swing tables, a crane and logging tongs......what's not to like! As Tim the Tool Man would say: Ar Ar Ar Ar Ar!

Bought this Swisher (34 ton and 12.5 Hp Briggs) in the winter after burning my first fall... Can’t remember how many moons ago... 8 to 10 years ago... it’s got a clutch belt to disengage during cold winter months starts. Really worried about the belt lasting, but knocking on wood it’s still on it’s on belt... only having stalled out a few times on some real stubborn chunks... Split the majority of the times in the Vertical position. Built the catcher for when I do splitin the horizontal position.... I can’t do a milk crate too short for comfort... so I find a taller cut off piece to sit on...

Quite a bit of the time you will split the dog out of the block but with time you will learn to just drive the dog in just enough to hold the block then hold the block with the wedge and pull the dog out of the block with the winch.
The dogs can only be found in my little corner of the world. The cost is about $8.00 Canadian but the postal cost to the eastern States is around $20.00!

Thanks!!! Smart!!! Who knows how many years it would have took me to figure that out :)
I ordered two unused condition antiques last night on eBay. Had the debate in my mind. Should I use an original antique or is it sacreligous?
Came to the conclusion the original makers and users would rather see them put to use than Anything else.
Came to 31 and change for two from two separate sellers. Not bad.

Thanks Screwloose. Ordered two more and it’s a good site for future purchases. Now I can make a couple of sexy necklaces out of the antique ones.

Hey, you did extremely well at the gtg last April. I can still picture you throwing those heavy oak splits. It was a workout for sure!

I bought a woods splitter a few months ago to replace my homemade rig. Can't find a pic of the rig. Hand split for a good while before that. 20180622_180420.jpg

We use a 22T Duerr. It has a 6 horse Briggs on it. (2nd motor). I bought it 26 years ago used for 350$. I wish I knew how much wood it has split. I have replaced hyd cyl, valve and pump. It needs new tires but I’m still very happy with it. [IMG][IMG]

What kind of hydraulic oil do you guys run when you run your splitter year round? From the teens into the 80's? It seems the two types of oil 32/46 are good for either fall/winter/spring or summer but not for year round. Do you run synthetic or just whats "economical" on the shelf at your local store?

I just use 20w general purpose hydraulic oil. Same pump, valve and cylinder close to 40 years. I change it every few years and it looks the same coming out as it did going in.

I haven't read of anyone doing that either. I have read some guys just use ATF for year round running which seems good to me.
I thought I'd ask here for the forums consensus though.
Thanks I'll keep that in mind when I get around to getting one.

Our older 25 ton Yard Machine splitter says to use Mercron ATF fluid. Our new 30 ton County line splitter says to use universal hydraulic fluid.

Split for a few years using a Huskee 22 Ton. Pretty good machine. Currently needs the control rebuilt as the detent is 'gone'. I still have it for some reason, sitting drained of fuel.

A couple years ago, I couldn't pass up the Forest King 30T on Black Friday for $850 out the door. Was not happy with the Chinesium engine, so I swapped a used Honda 6 horse onto it that I had stashed away from my days working in a Repair Shop. So much less vibration, easier starting and quieter than the LCT unit that came on it. The LCT was nearly impossible to pull start in cold weather. I assume this is why the splitter came with electric start, which I fought the battery on after just 4 months of owning. The swap just made sense from all angles to me. Having a working table makes a tremendous difference and I'd recommend for any splitter. I've been happy with it since.
