....and this winters crop of Deer will just love you for doing it. They will probably be about 3" high come spring. Cedar hedging is pure deer candy come winter.

Weird rottiman , they leave my Cedars alone, of course the apple trees , other fruit trees, and the berry bushes are fair game. so maybe it's just what's available.

Pure bush deer up here thrive on cedar . People-oriented deer have a entirely different palate thanks to man's offerings in built up areas. Similar to the bear population in the bush vs. in the dumpsters and back yard feasts.

Arborvitae might be a good choice. Grows quickly and can be topped for a hedge effect. It is marketed around Western Washington as deer resistant but the neighborhood Blacktails will eat it if nothing better is available. Better means roses, clematis, strawberries, hosta, all food garden plants or any other shrub or succulent that you don't want them to eat. I suspect it is that way everywhere.

I had to pull a long 40 year old hedgerow of Arborvitae out because the deer came two Winters in a row and just decimated it. They ate the bottom 5 feet almost to the trunks and man oh man did they look awful.

Any prickly needled junipers grow there naturally ? How about native holly.

I'll bet Willis could recommend some fence row type plants.

Thanks Tim , I can do that .
Forsythia is a good choice , I would also look at Honeysuckle and Viburnums . I would also look at ornamental grasses like Zebra grass or Prairie Switch Grass they are fast growing thick and make a wonderful privacy screen .

I don't know which varieties are hardy for your area , I suggest you contact the extension office or Ag . school or garden center and ask them . I would also plant a double row with the shrubs on the outside and the grasses on the inside filling in the gaps between . Hope this helps .:handshake:

Honeysuckle is one of the many shrubs we have here, love the smell.
    :)

Plan to propagate more for planting around the property.

I have one of these and it is a very attractive plant. Perhaps you might want to consider a Barberry hedge. they have thorns on them. Get the green one, fast growing and hardy.

You want to be careful about shrubs that are food for deer. Cedar is fine to dine on. Many other too.

The Japanese barberry is considered an invasive species by many states now and folks are encouraged to not plant them .

There is a native barbary. Some states have banned it due to the association with wheat rust. It is fairly common around here. Just banned form importing.

Privet hedge and lilacs make good neighbors around here.
