Well, one of our dominant red oaks tipped over last week from all the rain. This old fella was 30+" dbh. The picture below is where I cut it off about 4' above where the ground was. I just didn't want to dig out all the dirt and the black birch tree and roots to get that last bit. The bar in the picture is 32". I was running Stihl square ground full comp chain on my MMWS ported MS461. It blew through this tree like butter, never bogged down a bit. It made me VERY happy. I've got lots more bucking to do and that will also make me smile. Also, as some of you may know, I was way behind on C/S/S several other oak trees already, so again, anyone who wants to stop by and help out will go home with plenty of firewood.
Too bad it broke the upper part of the main stem when it hit the hickory. I could have had several more saw logs. Oh well, plenty of firewood. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, eh?
There was a tree in that pic? All I saw was a saw. Nice work Mike, I'll bet that saw does put a smile on.
Here's some picts of the three saw logs I managed to get out of the tree. The two bigger ones are about 28" inside the bark at the small ends x 12.5 feet long (the the one on the right looks a lot bigger because of the butt flair) and a 24" x 8.5" log. I can't wait to see what's inside. I hope there is no metal, but this one was on the edge of a field that has been in pasture for over 100 years, so there is a high likelihood of metal or other junk. No real obvious iron stain on the ends of any logs though. Fingers crossed.
Mastermind saw works, Jamestown Tn. I have heard that Randy is only doing new saws now (just a rumor) He is on OPE more than here
I've had saws done by MMWS and by TreeMonkey (a.k.a. Scott Kunz). I'm very happy with both. However, I'm absolutely no expert and there are plenty of other builders doing great work.
I put in some more time today, mostly limbing. However, I was able to start extracting a tiny amount of the sweet firewood About 1 more hour of work and the limbing will be completely done. Then, just straight up high quality BTU's. There's got to be about 2 full cord between the oak and hickory.
