About six miles from my house. Town took down 80 predominately White Oak trees. Gyosy moths got em last year. Free to good home. Just laying all over the side of the road. Surprising how fast the branches rot after a worm attack. Never saw that before but they’re the same all over. Branches just rot and fall off in one year. Trunks seem just fine though. Sorry for lousy pics. It was down pouring. Start hauling the trunks out tomorrow. That trailer got finished just in time. I’ll leave all the squiggly stuff for someone else LOL
I thought white oak was a rot resistant wood. Not a cedar or anything but,,,,,,,, was told it was used in the old days for barn framing even in contact with the ground because it tended not to rot as fast as most wood. Good to know about the shade. I do need to clean out the tree line where I stack. It’s getting too thick. That can be a winter job.
Looks like the white oaks here that are dead, but the trees have been stressed and in decline from the moths eating them bare for several years. Many of the ones that are still alive even all the way to the top don't look so good. Some do have a good crop of nuts this year though. With a bit of luck that might mean many seedlings.
The heart wood is rot resistant... the sap wood, not so much. So the timbers that you are referring to are likely just heartwood.

Yep, the sapwood will rot quicker. Limbs don't have much heart to them. First picture, tree was cut 18 months ago, next tree was a 3 yr old blow down. Still some great wood.
Well I got one load this morning. Found out I’ve been rented out this afternoon,,,,for free. Wanted to head back for one more. I just pulled over in what looked like one of the nicer spots. Seems to be red oak to me??? Oh well it burns too.
Nice setup and logs, yep, looks like red oak, looks solid too. Great way to load them, when you don't have room for other equipment to operate. Me likes it.
Yes it’s a dump. That was the intent from the beginning. Get it fast and get out of there Hahaha. Actually I have chronic Lyme. Most days I just can’t work long enough to make heading into the woods with a tractor and old trailer worthwhile. This way I can still scavenge wood and process it at home whenever and however long I want to. Keeps me off the couch
