Hello everyone, first I need to say I'm the farthest thing from an electronic techy type guy but I needed to put this out, grab a Beer or beverage because it may get lengthy. :coldone::popcorn:
I'm sure by now most of you know the positives of having a cell phone but I've been researching and finally saw something on TV about our phones that made my hair stand on my neck.
After confirming this with a "Super tech" guy at my old Command last night, he confirmed the stories. We sat in a private room, "The Chiefs club" had a beer and I got a earful. Google is your worst enemy!!! Be warned!!!
"YOUR PHONE IS LISTENING TO EVERY WORD YOU SAY"! Even if you are not using it!!! No different than those things such as Alexis and the other things in your house to set your security and turn your lights on and off. Your camera on the phone can be remotely operated without you even knowing. Turning off your phone doesn't help.
As most know, "all" phones have a built in GPS and "IF" someone, not just big brother whats to find you they can very easy. A simple "wrong number" that called you and you answered could implant spyware in your phone.
Here about a year ago, my Android was hacked and someone put a Trojan horse virus in my phone and locked it! It took three guys from Sprint to unlock it just to get my numbers out and I had to get a new SIM card.
Why I went on this escapade is we've been getting weird texts, phone calls from over seas and you may think, "oh it happens to all of us" well, our house phone has been called all hours of the day, night and in the middle of the night, both our cell phones ring and no number or caller is on the line, no number shows up, our phones have rang at the same time, and this is not just a fluke occurrence. It happens daily several times, I have gotten calls hearing nothing but "data" noise like tones and beeps and so on.
My friend, who has worked in the IT field for 30+ years and is military retired told me if you want to truly feel safe "Take the battery out of your phone when not in use".
This has happened to us on several different occasions with different carriers. Now, I am retired military and held a high clearance but I've been debriefed as many of us in the military have been, and frankly I have nothing to share.
Now, I know some of you are thinking I'm either nuts or paranoid :loco: ;):wacky: so either way I like my privacy as I'm sure most of you do. So lets put this to bed now because I only use my phone "maybe" three times a day. I don't have Facebook or Myspace, I don't go looking for porn, I don't have tweeter, snap chat, or any of those things and somehow I've been hacked in the past.
My friend told me last night that "Anything" can be put on your phone without your knowledge!!! Big brother has been looking at facebook for years since it's inception. My last Command used to spy on there people through social media, they all do!!!. If you have e-mail on your phone, sending it through the air, thats even "WORSE"! Once it's in the air, it's free!!! Even if you think it's encrypted, it's easy to unravel with the right software. DO NOT DO BANKING through your phone!!! Your just asking to be cleaned out!!! :jaw:

Use a house landline for any business calls or important things you don't want out there. Most criminals could care less to hack a house line when cells are "much easier"!

Anyway, moral of this story is: Do your own research, your phone is a great tool but can be "Very dangerous" to you, your well being, your family and savings and banking. Don't take that small computer in your hand for granted and if you think nobody's listening or watching, they most likely are!!!

I can take my tinfoil hat off now! ;) Dave

I pay for security monitoring, monthly fee. Addition monitoring by my financial institution, updated new router, and installed security protection on my phone. I don't think these are 100%, but I do think there are easier targets for thieves to target. My home phone has a call screener that keeps the phone from ringing unless it has a recognized number stored, or the call is screened. This blocks. Robot calls. My phone will announce calls that make it through the screening. Problem not solved yet are scammers using numbers that are legitimate. The clone real numbers making called I'D unable to screen them out.

I think more people need to understand the fact that if someone really wants to find out more about you, that they will. All banks use electronic data about you, and could be hacked, probably easier than hacking Google, Amazon, or Apple's servers.

Don't ever log on to a wifi connection you don't trust. That's where so many people go wrong.

Also, don't think because you have an iPhone that you are impervious to being hacked.

Oh yeah, my dad had life lock for him, and someone bought a 2 wheeled scooter, electric iirc, using his identity and they created an eBay account and too a credit card out in his name. It was shipped to Pennsylvania somewhere. Life Lock wouldn't help at all, and it was a pita for my mom to deal with so she wouldn't be responsible for something that my dad, nor she had anything to do with. This happened while my dad was still alive.

Mind you, my dad never did any online banking, never had a smart phone ( crappy flip phone that he wouldn't text on) and he barely ever used a computer.

    So there's that...

Larry, my IT buddy said all that stuff is actually easy for someone who knows what their doing! They let a computer "scramble" the security signals till it's so confused it will shut it's self down, reboot and by that time it's to late. All those security features are good, don't get me wrong but some bad folks are one step ahead of the good folks! Thats why the good folks "employ" some of the hackers! As Horkn said, they'll find out about you if they want. I turn my phone off all day and if I'm traveling I pull the battery out. This will allow your phone to reboot also and help with fire walls. As far as financial stuff, I used my debit card once in a restaurant and the next day someone was buying tires for there car 300 miles away with the same number! Bank of America caught it and called me.

Someone buying tires with your number. Crazy idiots. Scum of the earth.

Reading through this thread somehow reminded me of something that happened recently. I was looking to buy a computer and filled out their form in the Net but did not submit yet. Then before I hit submit I got a notice from our credit card company stating there was a questionable charge. It was from that computer company! Yet I had not submitted anything. The charge was for only a dollar so not a big one but if they do it for a dollar, what is to stop them from doing it for more? I contacted the company to try to raise some He!! but all I got was a game of phone tag. You need to talk to this one. You need to talk to that one. I really wanted to take them to court but for only a dollar, who would take the case? Needless to say, it will be a cold day in He!! before I ever purchase anything from that company.

Can't take the battery out of my cell phone. It is a sealed unit. But I have rebooted it. It is a pain in the backside to do that, but a good factory reset can't hurt. I save my contact in a place that is easy to access to download. My apps aren't too bad. I save my pictures to the cloud.

This kind of thing has been going on for years. What do you think the entire purpose of all of these big tech companies is (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.)? They are not private companies. They are operations in my opinion. Many may disagree with this statement but I believe we are witnessing the rise of the beast which the Bible talks about. I believe the beast is a system of total global control. Kinda makes sense when you look at what is happening these days. However I am not a Bible scholar by any means.....that is just my opinion.

Yes it has Marvin, "But" according to my friend it's getting more wide spread and much easier. Now I know you quoted the bible on this but this is also a matter of choice! Nobody makes you have a cell phone or a computer. The Amish who are hard Christians have no idea this crap is going on. I'm not preaching any type of doom and gloom, all I was saying up in the article is cover your @$$!

You raise an excellent point. I'm wondering how much longer it will be optional to live a low tech lifestyle as our society continues to get more and more techy. It is my understanding that 5G is going to be rolling out soon and it has been said everything will be connected to it. When I say everything I mean literally everything. Granted I dont think it will happen over night but we continually get more and more accepting/used to big tech running our lives.

However, like you said, we always have a choice whether we want to participate or not. The big question will be what is the cost of opting out in the future.

I think that is how they corner the consumer into buying their protection plans at $10+ a month. They said it is how they make the phone waterproof. They drop into a fishbowl of water to demonstrate how water resistant it is. I've been told that Apple's new phone doesn't have an access port for earbuds.

This makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I really dislike all this "connected" stuff...really ticks me off when I fire up my printer to copy 1 page and it connects to the web for an update right away...its a stinkin printer! I don't like this one bit...I want my old printer back...had wireless connection to my laptop for wireless printing, but would not connect itself to the web.

I just leased a new car a few months ago. It came with a wifi hotspot. Free trial for a couple of months that I did not use and let the service lapse. I have my flipphone on maybe a few hours per month.

There's a lot of phone's like that. My 4 yr old motoX battery is starting to go. If I could replace the battery, I would, but even then, I want a new phone with the most up to date OS. You know, for security reasons.

The waterproofing is part of the non removable battery, as well as the lack of a headphone jack. Now, apple did away with the 3.5mm headphone jack 3 phones ago, on the iPhone 7 in 2016. The best google phones ( pixel series) have not had the headphone jack for a couple years as well. They want you to use Bluetooth headphones.

Yeah, I hafta agree with you here.

I still have a "dumb phone", but just this morning an "opportunity" to get a new smart phone, and save a ton of money on our monthly cell phone/internet bill presented itself...the cheapskate part of me says go for it...but I hate change, and kinda resist all this lastest technology stuff (which is kinda weird, because I like "gadgets") and now this thread pops up and gets me thinking...with a smart phone "they" have access to everything if this is true about being able to hear you at all times...so they can hear you, they can track you, they can see your email...and texts, banking info, oh, and what about your pictures!?! :hair:
Screw 'em I'm going back to a land line...or better yet, smoke signals! ;)  o_O

You would be surprised at what data your car keeps. It varries by manufacturers but your car knows if you’re naughty or nice
