Scenario: A local arborist is dropping six large trees that are threatening my house and power lines. By threatening I mean the tree and the front yard touches a tree in my backyard over my roof. So I am paying big bucks to get them dropped safely, but all the wood is staying on the property. Personally I own a non running Craftsman 42cc and a fully functioning Husqvarna 450 with a 20" bar. Neither saw is going to get the job done, but luckily for me my uncle has a few saws including a Husqvarna 372XP sporting a 24" bar.

    The trees: 1 locust (18" DBH), 2 pin oak (28" & 38" DBH), 3 red maple (18"-24" DBH)

My plan is to borrow the 372XP and gas splitter and get to work on the aftermath. My uncle won't let me sharpen any of his chains, not because he doesn't trust me, but because it is his saw so he pays to have them sharpened...poorly. I want to buy a second bar and a handful of chains for my personal use for this project and others. What are your thoughts on a 24" Sugihara? The 372XP has a 24" Husqvarna bar on it now and I don't think I want to go any longer. Moving on to chains. I will be noodling some of the larger rounds. Would it be best to use a milling/ripping chain for this or a skip tooth? I have noodled about 15 rounds of 36" red oak with this saw using a standard semi-chisel chain. It worked, but clearing chips was definitely an issue. For bucking I was considering doing a 10 pack of loop chain from baileys. Leaning toward semi-chisel because I mainly cut blow-downs so I deal with lots of debris on the bark. Obviously I shouldn't need 10 chains do get this job done, but for one, I don't like to sharpen in the field and two, I think you save about $5 per chain if you buy in bulk. Are the woodland pro chains decent? I have a good amount of experience with Oregon and Husky chains only. Alright, enough rambling from me. Thanks in advance.

For the bar , look at performance outdoor.com They carry Total bars ,which are a Tsumura bar . They will be available to fit the 372xp without using a bar adaptor like on the Sugihara .having said that there is nothing wrong with the Husq. Bars . They are Oregon bars
For chains , go to logger chain .com . They sell Oregon chain at about the best prices around ,shipping included in the price . They also sell bars . ( oregon )
Woodland Pro is decent chain( it’s Carlton ) ,but shipping can get a bit stiff from Bailey’s .

Get yourself one of these..... the bar and chain are included for free... then send it out to Mastermind to get some extra bananas. There, did I spend enough?

    Here is Nate's store. He's a member here fordf150

I'd get a Tsumura lightweight 24" bar in D009 mount and some chisel chain. He has great prices and shipping is cheap. I usually tell him what I want via pm and he sends me back an invoice. Pay with paypal

Also, when noodling, lift the powerhead a couple inches higher than the bar tip. The noodles won't be so long and won't clog so soon. It also helps to hold a 4"ish gap between the saw and the log

An Oregon or Husqvarna bar will work fine. Stihl chain is great I prefer it to Oregon. Instead of buying 10 chains why not get 5 and a pferd two in one sharpening kit? Everyone on this forum seems to love it, and I believe it's worth the $. Maybe get a square chisel chain for the noodling? It's your project have fun if you were my neighbor I would help you.

Tsumura or Sugihara are great bars. The rails wear very little with heavy use. They’re worth it imo unless you are on a strict budget.
    I got mine from http://www.woodcuttersgaragellc.com

Thanks, I will check out Nate's store. Thanks for the noodling tip. I never burry the dogs to allow for chip clearance, but never thought about the angle of the bar.

The saw was bought for my use. Manly to clear large trees that uproot on my uncles property. I will inherit it at some point. Sorry if I didn't provide enough back story. Thanks for the suggestion.

I was only going to do the 10 pack because of the price break per loop. As for sharpening, I like to go into my garage, put the Phillies on the radio and knock out 5+ at a time on the electric sharpener.

I ended up making a purchase at Nate's store. A 24" Tsumara bar, 4 full chisel Oregon chains, 1 ripping chain and a plastic wedge for good measure. The package is expected to deliver tomorrow and the trees are slated to come down Tuesday and Wednesday after the holiday. Long range forecast shows lots of rain next week, hoping it doesn't delay the process.

If your going to be doing a lot of noodling the wide discharge clutch cover might be useful. :makeitrain"
