Is a pulling cone a necessity for pulling a chimney liner? Are there other ways to pull it successfully without spending extra $50 $60 bucks on a cone I'll hopefully use once. I've got approx 23ft to pull and inside flue dimensions are roughly 11" x 11" give or take an 1/8" . Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I opted not to get the cone when I installed my 6" ss liner the other week. While it probably would have helped it was not necessary. A little twisting and a few grunts and mine went in alright. I was installing in an 8" flue that was nice and straight though as well. Not sure what you're flue may be like....
I made one out of a piece of 2x6 I had kicking around. Screw the liner to it, tie a rope and pull. Depending on the dimensions of chimney you are pulling it through, expect the liner to get banged up with this method and to cut off the bottom 6”. If due to length, you can buy a pull cone instead of an extra 5 feet of liner, then a pull cone that protects the end might be a better option.
Thanks fellas, other caveat I forgot to mention was am gonna have the company I buy liner from ovalize bottom 2ft of the liner to pass my damper and reshape once past it to connect to appliance adapter. So sounds like pulling cone won't do me any good anyways. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I've seen where you can rent Pulling Cones for $35 - If you are planing on trying to ovalize the end of your liner to get through your Damper, Make sure you ovalize it enough to fit through. If it doesn't fit through, then it has to come back out, off the roof, onto the ground, and by this time your're getting tired of this BS, so you jump up and down on the liner so it's so thin, it slides right through the damper, but it's to thin for the exhaust to vent. Personally I prefer grinding the Damper out then install a round liner all the way through.
I got lucky with mine I have a standard masonry flue with a clay liner that is 8x8 I was able to drop my liner down without any problems had to lift up and back down some do some mortar and tiles being out of line but other than that no issue
You won't have any issues getting in a 11 x 11 flue. But I'd cut that damper out, forget the ovalizing...if you ever want to use the fireplace again (but you won't) you can just install a top damper.
Thanks fellas and thanks Brenn I was thinking that as well. I don't ever think I'd use it as a fireplace again but am not sure sometimes if am coming or going with this house. If I see what am looking for we might up and move so I wanted to be able to put everything back way I had it pre insert. Cotter pin and damper lid and handle come right out so. Ovalizing it is tempting because my damper is 5 3/4" wide so it only needs to be ovalized a little to pass. On flip side just re looking at the damper I only need to cut out a very small part to pass the liner I wouldn't need to gut the damper completely out. Need to re process it all. Ovalizing sounds so tempting..... cut the damper. Much easier install. Much easier to clean w/standard brush.
I have a big flue and put an 8" liner in.....I bought the pulling cone and was glad I had it. By the time I had the cost of the liner and insulation and extra stainless wire to wrap the mesh, it was like what the heck it's just money.
Only 2ft will be ovalized but I without a doubt hear what all you guys are saying and value your experience and knowledge. Thank You!!! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
