Got around to cutting down a dead pine tree a week or two ago. I stacked the rounds to later split but after re-looking at them last night looks like they might be rotted or not much of it to burn. Not much in the core. Thinking they should skip the pile to burn inside and add to the fugly pile for firepit or friends/family mooching wood for their firepits.
They got some punk in them, most dead pine does in the east.. Save the better one for kindling and October damp and rainy fires. If your short on wood. If not bon fire wood!!
I've burned pine like that. The problem I had was some was uncovered stacked and the punky part burned like crap if it was the least bit wet. Plus itcan be messy.
I have a new term to add to my Firewood Dictionary. Among others is: Designer Fire wood - perfectly quartered, clean and picturesque fire wood that is used as a design element in decorating. This wood is only actually burned to impress guests. (see Martha Stuart). Now I can add : Mooching wood - fire wood that is inferior, often punky or ant ridden. Suitable only for out door burning or disposal. Often set aside for giving to people who think that you got your fire wood for free so you should share it with them. These people usually don't know the difference between their BUTT and a BTU. (see Moocher. Also see Relative)
Put it in a pile near the road with a sign “Firewood for sale” You won’t have any visitors asking if you want to sell a cord of hardwood for $60.00 and even the moochers will stay away.
So if you go into a Safeway or grocery of the like around here, that cut shows exactly the kind of quality of wood at $5 a bundle for hardly a handful. I look at it and would rather buy a presto log than that. Burns barely an hour and I’m hardly warmed up as there’s so much punk in it. Paper sheets feel lighter...don’t mind if it starts your fires but don’t pursue it anymore than needed.
Haha I thought about this stuff like my white birch. Just pretty wood, white papery clean outside but different story when fire engulfs it. I know some people thought of just having that wood in their stove when they hit the warm season and the glass is clean to fill an otherwise bland space but hey it’s for sale online for 54.99 for 3 medium sized pieces...
