An elderly man who is a customer of my wife's mentioned he was having a tree taken down. He lives2 miles down the road. I left a nite telling him I would haul the wood off if he would like.

I ended up getting the wood and nakmak a friend . He invited me to anytime! My first real wood score... IMG_20180813_160136015_HDR.jpg IMG_20180813_150952022_HDR.jpg IMG_20180813_160136015_HDR.jpg IMG_20180813_150952022_HDR.jpg

GREAT SCORE! One time, I heard my neighbor running a saw, so I went down to poke my nose into his business. It turns out that he was dropping a gorgeous 24'DBH black walnut in his back yard because "it's so messy." He wound up giving me the trunk logs for free (about 500 bd-ft of super clear boards). He took the top for firewood. Everyone went home happy! That don't happen every day, but as you said, "It never hurts to ask."

I always ask! A couple weeks ago I ended up with a small maple (about 1/2 cord) at the start of the week from one neighbor, and a large birch (about a full cord) at the end of the week from another neighbor. The maple was a result of waking up to the sound of a chainsaw, and the birch was the result of seeing a tree crew stop about 3 houses down from my own.

Conversely: A landowner on my drive into work had a couple of walnut trees taken down in her yard(definitely some metal in them, obvious dark streak at the end of the logs) I stopped by and introduced myself and let her know that I could take her logs off of her property at no charge to her. I also referred her the "Highly valuable black walnut tree" meme on the internet .
Recently, she reached out to me and I said "I cannot pay you anything for your logs, but I could move them off of your property for free." She declined my offer. No sweat of my back. You win some and you lose some.

If that is your first real wood score, you set the bar high. That’s a lot of nice firewood.

    Nice score!

Two weeks ago they had a crane in removing a tree from the side yard of a house 6-8 houses down from me. Of course the front end of my Bronco was torn apart in the driveway at the time, so I had to just sadly drive by.

That was top notch that you did that. I always try to leave an area cleaned up. It helps give us hoarders a better image, especially since some of us are viewed as a little....well...odd!

He came knocking on the door today to say thanks in person and brought us a dozen donuts. He's a nice guy!

:thumbs:LA few years ago, a coworker knew of my hoarding desire, so he asked if I wanted an Osage, a Pin and a Sassafras.... “of course!”
A year later he asked if I wanted to drop 14-16 trees- several Maples, a White Oak, a Hickory and a Cherry..... so some members here asked if I needed help getting ahead after my 2015 hernia surgery.... yep, it never hurts to ask or be asked.:thumbs:
