A man's got to know his limitations.

Anybody ever seen Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry in Magnum Force? I'm an amateur carpenter and I do know my limitations! However, that doesn't keep me from attempting a wood project now and again. I wanted to build a rustic- looking firewood container for my sun room where I had a free-standing Jotul F55 Carrabassett installed in April. I planned the design, bought the wood, etc., and built it this past weekend. I measured accurately and made my cuts as straight as I could. It isn't perfect, but it is functional. I actually think it turned out pretty well. I would not let my wife see it until it was done. I know she could hear sawing and pounding going on in the basement ( and quite possibly an occasional expletive or two ). She knew what I was making but I had not told her much else about my project. When I finally let her see it, she said, after a long pause: "It's better than I thought it would be." This is actually high praise from her. It was my idea to put the rusty-looking tin ornaments on the container. That ash wood "cookie" that says "Gone to the Lake" refers to Raystown Lake here in Huntingdon County, PA. It's a favorite destination of ours to kayak, hike, fish, etc. My wife's contribution was to glue the tin ornaments on the firewood container after deciding where to put them. We used Gorilla Glue. It worked very well. She has a better eye for that kind of thing than I do. The dimensions are 53" x 23" x 21". I have attached some pics.

I keep thinking I'll build an enclosed firewood "hopper" with a lid, then empty it with a scoop every few days. If I have firewood (especially kindling) in the house too long, the dogs think it's their job to turn it into mulch.

 

Thanks papadave . Dogs and kids are a lot alike. You can buy them expensive toys, but they seem to be most attracted to the things you don't want them to be attracted to.

 

Yeah, when I was a kid, sticks were more fun than any toy. They could be a gun, sword, telescope, lots of other stuff...............
I hope you don't lose too much crud from between those slats.

Re: come to the lake.

Last weekend I looked out the window at the giant mess of cars at my neighbor across the streets waterfront cottage. I looked at my wife and said "if we ever end up moving to one of the waterfront houses, and that many people want to come over...I'm going to sell the house"

Thanks Eric VW ! I put a good coat of polyurethane on it after I was done. Like I've said before on the various threads, about 80% of the wood I burn is slab wood, which is debarked at the sawmill for the most part. Sure, there will still be some flaking pieces of bark and wood crud, but not as much with regular cord wood.

 

Spirit of Two Socks I like it! I don't understand the limitations part of your post title though. Looks to me like you could build anything you put your mind and hands to!
