i went to look at a 261 this afternoon and I wasn't very excited about it so I passed. But on the way home I stopped at shop I've passed lots of times, about 30 miles from the house, but it was always either closed or I had a car load that weren't nearly as interested. It's a nice little shop and friendly. I wasn't looking at all to walk out with what I did walk out with. He made an offer and I couldn't say no. A couple 288's to work with. This ought to be fun if I can get a good runner out of the two.
288xp the hotrod of the two series huskys. I have always wanted one. Or a 281, those are nice also. 2 series huskys are great saws.
Went at the two of them today while the weather was crappy. What I found so far is the one with 160 psi compression has at least two issues, 1) there's some good scoring, as seen through the exhaust port and 2) I can only see it through the exhaust port because one of the hold down bolts has an stripped head. The other thing I found was the one with 140 psi compression has a good looking p/c. I'd like to put that on thing one, but I can't get the cylinder off. Any help on getting that bolt out?
If no one else chimes in with a better idea, can you get in there with a dremel stone or carbide cutter to carefully grind the head off? I cant imagine any of those extractors would reach down that far.
I bought a set of Husky Allen wrenches this morning advertised as being useful for rounded heads. They have a cut/profile at the tip. No Go. Actually rounded the profile on the tool. So for now, I'm staying with thing one with the 160 as the focus build machine. And I'll scavenge from the thing two, which has more pieces and they look to be in better condition, if for only existing. Fooled around with thing one's oil pump today. I think we'll be using thing two's.
That head is probably jammed with crud. Either give the allen wrench a few good wraps to seat it or dig out the head with a pick.
Don't know what those are. I can google or you can continue to help me out as you have in the past. And has always been appreciated!
This is a t27 size torx head driver. It fits most fasteners on stihl, dolmar, and new huskies. T25 is smaller. T30 is larger I'm not saying it'll work, but it might.
I’ve used the next size torq head at work on moto’s w good results. Put it on an impact driver and whack away. Might make the bit sacrificial but worth getting the screw loose.
Didn't pull it yet. Still celebrating the win on the hold down bolt. Hope to pull it and swap it with thing two tomorrow to see if I get a better compression. Since I've seen the piston on thing one and it's not good but it has a much better compression, I'm hoping the decent p/c on thing two, with the lower compression, will bring it up on thing one. Maybe seals are bad on thing one. A couple interesting notes. Thing one seems to be a 1992, has a huge fuel filter and no decomp valve. Thing two has a decomp and huge filter also. And it's filthy. It's 1999. I bought a replacement filter and it's the same one I'd put in a 359 or 346 and it's half as big. I'm getting good spark out of both igniters, although thing one was brighter. I have one carburetor, one clutch, one clutch cover and one brake handle. Thanks for the help!
