Looks to me like possibly red oak.

Split a piece and see if the fresh wood is more red than the previous split/noodle. The red color does fade after being split and exposed to the elements.

Does it smell a tad? Red oak when cut can smell a bit, helped my cousin buck some up yesterday and it has a distinct smell.

I don’t see any medullary rays typical of all Oaks....but maybe it’s the camera angle....
    Otherwise, I’m stumped.

Sure is nice looking farwood tho!

Cut like someone was cutting it for something other than firewood.

Raining today so I wimped out on splitting tonight. I’ll update on looks, smell, taste, Etc later this week. This came off a big crotch - had to cut the Rounds into quarters so I could lift them - even so I was puffin when done. I did say it was heavy...

    Thanks to all

    Me neither.
If it's catalpa, it will dry out to be fairly light.

My thoughts also. Grain doesn't look open enough for oak either.

Catalpa is a sulfurus yellow when cut.
Gpsfool's wood looks like hemlock to me.

Looks like it's Freetree wood to me, and it's already home. I'd split her up, and when its cooler, burn it to get rid of it! And pour a stiff Scotch or Irish whiskey to drink while it burns. Seems to help any wood burn better! True Story!

Neither the bark nor the growth rings look like oak to me. Looks to be good firewood though!

    Yep!
As long as you're "stinkin' it to the man", doesn't matter what kind of wood it is!
