Couldnt see spending the bucks on a grapple trailer no matter how much fun that would be. So my compromise was buying a welder and mounting a winch in front of my dump trailer. No one can foresee the future but I think I tested it today.
Nice. It did the pulling and you dealt with giving it a nudge , now and then. Slab or firewood? That's a big piece.
Sacreligous on this site but neither. Pine, just too big to be worth the effort of splitting. As for milling there’s too much metal in it. I can see a piece of dog chain sticking out and assorted nails, bolt hooks etc. Used to be a house dating to 1762 on this piece of our property. One of the previous owners was a boilermaker from NY. He liked metal. Another tree this size had a 3/4” rod all the way through it holding a metal vice buried in the wood. This one got dumped in the woods for the ants. Some of the pieces from higher up where all the branches started. These went into the swamp for whatever is in the swamp that eats wood.
It is amazing what those winches will pull up on a trailer. I put one on my utility trailer about 5 years ago and have used it plenty of times. I have also used it to pull a few trees over in the direction I wanted. Good job on your welding to hold up to that beast.
For sure. I’m amazed at the winch but mostly just how strong that synthetic rope is. Would have preferred the more traditional cable but this winch was a CL steal that I couldn’t pass up. 11,000+lbs rating on a1/4” rope? I can only assume we found a piece of rope at Area 51 and reverse engineered it. As for the welds I was standing well to the side on this pull
Yeah she’s been laying there about three years now. Let the local Maple sugar producer take it but he gave up on the bigger stuff. Can’t say I blame him one bit.
