My wife and I heard what sounded like a tree coming down and hitting something metalic. Our pole shed is in reach of trees hitting it if they fall in the correct direction. Luckily, not today. I believe it is a red oak that came down and may have taken a birch with it. Really wet and buggy in the woods so I did not go in closer for a better look. The bottom of the tree looks like it barber chaired. Should be interesting cutting it up later this fall.
It's nice when nature lends a hand. Just be careful when you get the chance to free it up. Looks like there will be a lot going on there.
I plan on waiting until this fall after the leaves are off before I start messing with it. It is close to the wood shed so I won't have to move it far. It looks like half of the bottom of the tree is still attached so I don't know how much more it will settle without cutting off the top of the tree and whatever trees it took down with it. Another fun time of pick up sticks
I've had some maples do that. One side of the trunk dies and starts to rot, then they snap off about 7 feet up, only they don't completely break free. It's pretty nerve wracking putting them on the ground. Good luck.
Erik B I am likely wrong on this, but I keep looking at the leaves in the third pic. They seem like they have rounded lobes, could it be a white oak? Still learning how to ID trees.
Chaz The third picture was to show what appears to be a birch that came down with the oak. It is kind of hard to determine what leaves are with the oak. The one still standing on the left side is a shagbark hickory and there is a dead elm on the right side. There is a lot of other brush in that third picture which makes IDing trickier. When I get a chance to get in there a get a better look, I will report my findings.
Thx Erik B I was primarily focusing on the oak leaves in the upper-mid right side. Can't make the image quite large enough.
I went back to the original picture on my computer and enlarged it but I still couldn't make out which leaves go with which trees. Between the rain we have gotten the past couple days along with high dewpoints and it being in a tangled mess, I don't feel like getting jeans on to go have a better look.
Can't blame you much there. Fortunately we had a thunderstorm come through about 2hrs ago. Now 68°F out. Trying to post a screenshot from my phone.
Chaz I found another picture taken this past winter that shows that tree. You can see a pretty bad lean in the direction it went down. left side of the picture, the larger tree leaning to the left is the one, the one with a good flare on the bottom. I don't know how to draw arrows to give a better ID.
