    You need chickens Midwinter!


    I cleaned all the shavings from in the coop this morning and took it down to the compost pile. Added a couple inches of fresh stuff along with fresh hay in the run. Happy girls they are! Hopefully this induces more eggs! Only got that one so far! :tears:

    I guess you don't know which chicken laid the egg, maybe it's special in some way.
    Nashua zoning says no chickens, unless you are grandfathered in. I get my eggs from a little farm/plant stand over by the dump, which has that exemption. I can visit the coops, so that must suffice.

    I don't know which one layed it? I could tell them apart before, but can't anymore. I know which one is the rooster, that's it. There was one that started laying in the nesting box after an egg was taken away. She decided to lay on the ceramic ones instead. I took them out so she doesn't get broody.

    Us, none.

    Have co-workers that have chickens, they bring in excess eggs all the time.

    We raised turkeys one year, it was cool.

    Have thought more along the lines of a rabbit hutch. Rabbits are quiet. LOL

    Also thought of raising a couple of pigs, but I'm not sure i wanna deal with that.

    It's just us and Holly.

    We have a friend that has pigs. We're thinking goats maybe next year or the year after.

    The good thing about pigs is that they will eat anything, so scrape your plates after a meal and supplement the regular feed. Also, they will uproot any stumps or rocks, or just plain help you level out the ground. We used to go in with several friends and get 4-5 piglets. One friend raised them and took them to slaughter while the rest of us covered the cost of the feed - and of course the cost of the slaughter for our chosen pig.

    When we raised the turkeys (3) I was surprised how quickly they ate every shred of green in their run area. :bug:

    We took to letting them out after work to forage for a while. It was great fun to Holly, she liked to herd them. It was fun to watch. :rofl: :lol:

    The down side was keeping an eye out for all the turkey droppings.:eek:
