Could've lost quite a bit of the flock today! A bear came up while we were working and moved about a 1000 lbs of material. My guess is the cinder blocks, boulders, pavers and a 4x6x10 gave him a workout, and finally the hardware cloth apron, he gave up. I NEED to get 3 strands of electric fence up!

    Yikes. More blocks n rocks!!

Boards with nails in them, sticking up might help. Unless there's danger to the chickens and your dog.

    Great idea!

Out of time tonight! After running to tractor supply and getting electric fencing, I was only able to put in the insulators for 3 rows of wire. One at 8", another at 2ft and the last at about 4ft. Hope the bear stays away tomorrow while I'm at work!

When there is 16 rotisserie chicken in an enclosed area, you'd be drooling too!

There was plenty of wildlife concentrated on your property just a few weekends ago.

Thx! Haven't seen any coons yet, and I've read that there nasty, hunting for sport the way they rip only the heads off! Why this bear don't rip the hardware cloth down is beyond me! I hope it stays away until I can get this electric hung.

You're lucky, that was probably an inexperienced (young) bear. An older bear wouldn't have bothered with the foundation and just take the side of the mesh and/or coop down. I had a bear pull a strong, 6' tall, vertical aluminum spike fence over to the ground so he/she could get in to steal a bird feeder that was hanging in a tree 20 feet away from the fence. that feeder was on a 4' rugged cast iron hangar hooked onto a 3-4" diameter branch of a mature maple tree. He took down that branch and bent the heck out of the cast iron hangar before making his getaway with the prize.

I managed to get all the wire up! But, I need to wait 3 days for the battery to charge up for the solar charger. Ill be stopping tonight to get this damm ac in the window before we melt!

    Pictures of progress!

Front view- at some point ill connect the lower 2 hot wires so I only need to disconnect one disconnect.

Since the bear tried to gain access via windows, I thought a line across that area would help, may do something different because the nesting boxes are still vulnerable.

Back & side view. I need to add a 2x4 to the inside of the long run area to bring the hardware cloth in a little away from the one wire.

    The charger.......

He's got part broiler in him. Grew fast, keeping him exercising. Plus having 15 hens keeps him exercising to. ;)

I do have one out behind the coop in the woods. What kind of bait is good for coons? Salted apples, peanut butter?

Regarding the roo, happy wife happy life. :D
