Rita went in for her yearly checkup and the vet was pleased.

She was really sick in January into February and went from 9.4 pounds to 6.1 pounds. She was also very sickly and laying in her own filth. I was giving her a bath every night to clean her up and dried her in front of the pellet stove. I had to buy a large animal cage for her so that she couldn't crawl under and behind stuff to hide. Used pee pads for her to lay on to soak up her urine - that cage and those pads were a sanity saver because I had been scrubbing the basement floor every night and if I put the pads on the floor where she had been laying, she would find somewhere else to hide. We never found a definitive cause, although she had an elevated white count so the vet gave her steroids and massive antibiotics, which seemed to jump start her road to recovery.

It was a tough time for me since Fuzzy was on the decline too (he got somewhat better for a while, but had kidney issues for years and finally I had to let him go about 6 weeks ago).

Anyway, Rita made a great comeback since then, in spite of or because of the shots we have no clue. But she is fat and sassy at 9.2 pounds.

Will you clarify for me? She became sick after getting shots or the treatment medicine were injected.

She got sick for no apparent reason. Blood tests only showed an elevated white blood count. Vet gave her the shots and she slowly recovered. Don't know if the shots helped or it was something she got over herself. Baffling case indeed since she hadn't been outside for at least a month (she doesn't like cold or snow).

Very sad day here. Max was sick all night. He hasn't been well since the thing with the flea collar. I don't want to go into details. My watery eyes can hardly follow the typing on the screen. I took him to the Vet. Large abdominal mass with bleeding. Max will rest alongside his other fur friends. He was about as good of a buddy anyone could ever ask for.

I feel I was the lucky one to have Max as my friend. Very loyal to a fault. Tonight, I feel like the grim reaper. I can rationalize the whole thing, it is just my head and heart won't come together.
5 years ago, during the winter, we lost another lab. She was only three years old. We had her cremated. Today, we buried her ashes along with Max's remains. They were best buds.
