Does anyone know if they make some sort of remote thermostat or sensor that can be placed somewhere else in the house and have the HVAC run according to that remote thermostat vs. running off the main thermostat? Ideally it would be nice to be able program the main thermostat to either run from main thermostat or be able to change to read from remote thermostat. Hope that makes sense. Trying to get a little more info before pulling the trigger on making the leap to buying an insert thanks in advance fella's.

Looking around some of those smart thermos will do what am looking for. Not a huge fan of them but looks like the Nest comes with remote sensors which you can tell the main thermo to read from. Thinking this might be nice to use in winter if gets little cool upstairs and I need the HVAC to kick on.

Yeah those systems are a bit pricey to be sure.

Like everything, just depends on your needs, and budget.

We have a thermostat at a work property that runs seven zones on a forced hot air system. There is a sensor in each room, but they are not adjustable in the room.

The supply duct has a low-voltage damper that is operated by the programmed settings at the t-stat. I set each room for 70 degrees and can adjust as necessary. It is not a smart Wifi one like a Nest. It works well for setting individual comfort levels.

Plenty of room for operator error trying to find the zones to change temp setting.

I do the opposite but the method is the same. I have a switch that switches my livingroom thermostat from either the oil heat or the gas fireplace using a double pole double pole toggle switch.
You can use the same switch to switch between thermostats. Easy Peasy. :)

Pic 1 - Switch down = oil baseboard on thermostat
Switch Up = Gas firePlace On Thermostat

    Your set up would be:
    Switch down = main thermostat
    Switch up = remote thermostat
