Looking to buy an old parlor style wood stove to use as a show piece in my Study. It was in an old Victorian style home when the couple bought the place. How hard will it be to restore and whats the best way to restore it???
I’d start with an old wire wheel to take off the surface rust. I wouldn’t get very aggressive with taking material off of it. Then find some flat black stove paint and it will look as good as new. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I've sandblasted and painted them at our shop. If you want to go a professional restoration route that's the way to go. Or you could get it powder coated, which is slightly overkill since it's just for decor (but sometimes it's cheaper than paint) however it will outlive all of us whether you blast + powder coat or blast + paint. Where in WNY are you located? Here is one we blasted a few years ago, I believe the customer painted it himself.
I'm over in Erie county just outside Buffalo, NY...The stove is a steal for $200...Gonna try to talk them down to $100...
They are not hard to restore. Stoves actually come apart in many places so be prepared to cut the old bolts off (they never unthread), then reseal with modern day fiberglass gasket material just to make them more airtight when they are back together. I have restored many, many stoves and would (pun intended) do it as a sideline, but there is already a well known stove restoration and even museum here, so sadly that is not part of my retirement plans. This is a 1893 stove, and still works well. I do plan on tearing it down this year and rebuilding it, only to put gasket material in it so that it is more air tight; that is a prerequisite for burning coal which I do a lot of. I got it free, but a few parts for it cost me $30, but for a 125 year old stove, just the fact that I can still get parts is amazing.
