So, the other day I saw my weird neighbor was getting a tree taken down in their yard. I walked across the street when a worker was unloading the stump grinder from the trailer. I asked him what they were doing with the wood and he says they were going to dump it. I told him I burn wood and would take it all. He walked over with me and I showed him where to drop it. I was hoping it was black locust, as that is the tree species that the neighbor has the most of, but it wasn't. It was silver maple, but BIG. Here's a pic from the neighbors yard this morning on my way to work. logs in the driveway, and trunk to the left. First pic my wife sent me while I was at work after they dropped of 1 load. This made my day at work better. Then this is after another load, wife snapped this picture too. I'll have to measure the big pieces. Noodled in half by the tree service. Here's pics I took after I got home.
We do not have any maple, but I think it makes some pretty good firewood. damm good score. Big rounds!!
Silver maple dries fast, plus free is always gooder. I'm guessing it's at least 1.5 cords. Unfortunately it's going to be stupid hot this weekend. Heat indexes over 100 both days, with a heat advisory surely to be given by the weather service. So idk how much I can get done this weekend, but I'll buy gas and oil and work on it as I can. Probably in the evenings after work.
Little too subtle for me at this point in the evening I guess...that and our (outdoor) cat just came through the living room window screen! Was almost sittin on my shoulder 'til I realized what was happening!
The neighbors frown on that sometimes. Plus, this weekend, I'll be getting up early to get out on the water ASAP. Weekdays, I get up to go to work in the AM then there's daylight at the end of the day. That dolkita barks loudly, even with the cat in the muffler. Wait. Wouldn't there need to be a dog in the muffler for it to bark loudly?
Nice man! Oh dang don’t go working in that weather too dang long. If you can at least work in the morning some, might put less stress on you...got some mid 80’s and low 90’s coming up here soon. Well it sure is nice to get a freebie and the Ya Suck award is well earned here.
Sweet! Believe it or not but I've never burned silver maple but believe it is just about the same as our soft maple. Still good firewood, just not as good for holding long fires that we need in January.
Dries fast, splits pretty easily and not very hard on a saw either. I don't like silver maple much but I think I just don't like them as trees. They strike me as giant weeds that never got pulled, kinda like box elders. We have so many of them around here that I get sick of looking at them. REGARDLESS...Nice score, and certainly the convenience of it can't be argued with.
Yep, it burns the same as red/ swamp maple. With the way that winters have been here, I need more shoulder season wood.
Here too, especially on the summer side. Last year had a June 5 fire. This year wasn't too much earlier than that. Will be planting again tomorrow in the garden since so much has stayed dormant after planting three weeks ago. Oh, you suck!
