Rofl about 15 years ago I went out on a call in the middle of the night. There was a tractor trailer with a boulder hung up between the trailer tandems. Guy got hung up, then dragged it down the street a ways into a parking lot. I lifted the trailer and backed up to clear the tandems, then it it down. Told the guy he was on his own to deal with the boulder. Watched him leave right behind me.

Owner must have been pizzed to find a 36" diameter boulder in the middle of the parking lot in the morning.

Does the mailbox have to be right there what appears to be asking to get hit ?
I'd have a swingaway myself if it wouldn't block the stupidly designed sidewalk we have. Mine mostly gets hit by the snow plow. Sometimes it's the wall of snow cuz the driver is going a tad fast, sometimes the edge of the plow actually hits it . I went with the heaviest duty box I could find the last time ( the town replaces them with thin tin versions ) and set it on a cheap pine plank that breaks away. At least the box is still intact. Usually.

I'll admit that I haven't had any issues with people running into my mailbox, but am thinking maybe going the other way would be better. Don't make it more rugged, make it easy to replace or move. I just plopped my mailbox pole into a planter that I got on sale, filled the planter with rocks (no cement) to keep the pole up straight, and presto, an easily relocateable/replaceable mail box post. I've bumped it with the mower, run into it with the snowblower, and it gets a huge berm plowed against it in the winter (that I have to snowblow out) and it has been fine.

When I lived in Wareham we had a mailman that drank a wee bit, was constantly knocking over mail boxes. Some neighbors built brick towers.
I did something similar to that with 13 inch tires still on rims with the post carved down to fit thru the center hubs. It sorta worked.

Mines a pretty simple swing away.
RR tie sunk in 4' on house side of ditch.
Drilled a 3/8 hole in top of tie and inserted a pice of rebar
    10' hemlock 2x6
Hole drilled about 3' from one end slid down over rebar
Lag bolted a chain to bottom of tie on house side and drilled another hole in house end of 2x6 with a long eye bolt attached to chain for adjustability .
I had some left over foundation coating that I applied to top of 2x6.
I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has

That makes no sense. There are a lot of subdivisions around here that have stone or brick enclosures where the mail can be put in from the street and removed by the homeowner from the yard side. They start at the ground and completely encase the mailbox. They were all installed by the contractor that built homes. If it's a Federal law, why isn't it nationwide?

It’s a road commission guidelines in most places. There are a great deal of sub divisions going up without stone boxes now. Depending on where a person lives determines the fine & the consequences.

The law suit is something that does happen and because it’s on your property and does not conform to road commission standards you’ll loose in court. If somebody dies your held liable.

The other issue at hand is the postal service mail box requirements they are law in a federal level even though they are treated as guidelines most of the time in a court they are treated like law.

I had to have ours approved by the county and didn’t know that. It wasn’t even a day and I had a pink tag on the box with a fine if I didn’t get county approval and pull a permit. How stupid is that.

And I’m sure the permit to put in your mailbox cost some money, right Pallet Pete? What’s next, you going to have to pull a permit to take a dump.....but what does the govt care, as long as they get your money.
