House I grew up in had many cows and chickens but no horses or hogs. Geeze, we even had to milk those animals and clean up behind them and... Wife grew up about the same. Yup. We're country all the way.

I've been considering putting some chickens in the back yard, but not wanting to deal with the inevitable predators that will come calling. My friend had to shoot a beautiful red fox the other day. Caught in the act with a bird in his mouth in the middle of the afternoon. Had taken at least 7 birds prior. Tough spot to be in. The fox is only trying to survive, my friend 'provided' an easy means to do so. He was not proud for having done it. I place the value of a fox much higher than that of a few chickens...but what do you do in that situation? Has me gunshy about running chickens. I do love me some fresh, free range eggs though.

Yes there are! I was shocked & proud to see how much support there was in my area which is usually heavily more liberal. But yes generally speaking from Beantown to DC is a hotbed. It's funny because me and a few of my cousins always talk about picking up and moving either down south or inland a little further to be with more like minded people in a more like minded town or community. Plus it would give me my dream of living out in the country, one day hopefully!

Who'da thunk a guy born and raised in S.Philadelphia a few short blocks from sports stadiums (now living in S.Jersey) wants the country living. I blame my father LOL, he worked in SE Parts of PA as an operating engineer helped pave many parts of the infamous I95. He hated the commute from our row home in S.Philly but he LOVED the country out there, how beautiful it was. Exposed me to nature, state parks, fishing, just mother nature and it's beauty. Well it stuck with me for good, just so appreciative of the many beautiful things our country has and now passing it all on to my little ones.

You may not like it but in our case, we'd shoot the fox.

The statistics will show it's because they can't afford to live there anymore. Look at home prices there compared to income. 2 of my wife's cousins, brother and sister, bought a house together because they can't afford to live in their own. One is just single, the other divorced and with kids he has full time. While they make good money, it's not enough to overcome the stupid home prices, as well as the rest of the cost of living in the Bay area.

There's a lot of people in similar situations to them.

Was aware of them being used as a natural security alarm. Did not know they will take up for the other fowl. Interesting. I will let my buddy know he needs some guineas. There are more fox in his area. I saw a litter of kits two years ago...3 of them 1/2 mile from his house.
