Wife and daughter are happy to know phoebe has a good home.

 

Now don't rush into these decisions...it's only been two months. Heck, anyone can behave themselves that length of time! Keep her on probation and report back in a year or two....

 

You should change her name to "Lucky"........................... she is lucky all the way around.

Not sure if I am a good man but I do like animals and find that I generally get along with them quite well, and the benefits of having pets is greater than the cost, at least to us. Although Phoebe has her work cut out for her 'cause you would not believe what 24 hours in intensive care, along with X-rays, echo cardiograms, and oxygen chamber and assorted other treatments / medications cost! And because she is still a kitten and only weighs 6.5 lbs. the cost per pound really climbs!

And this is not a one- way street either; both myself and my wife are getting a great deal of positive emotional interaction back from the kitten too. Not that way though! (Easy Boys! this is my cat we're talking about!).

Yeah, Andrea suggested that when we were trying out names. She also wanted to name the puppy I got from the pallet processing place 'Chip'.

My mother had a black cat named Chloe, and my son has a black cat named Chloe now. I kinda' wanted to name this kitten Chloe just so I could cut down on the confusion and mistakes as senility takes over but Andrea did not like that. I was wary of naming her Phoebe because I thought it might create one of those situations where people do not hear it correctly and especially, cannot spell it. But so far, everyone we have had to deal with regarding the kitten gets it first time and spells it right so that seems to be working out.

We named a son Jared and it has been a bit of a burden on him constantly correctly people (Jerry? Gerold? Jeffrey?, etc.) along with the spelling (Jarrod, Jarod, Garrod, etc.). So I try to name things that people can hear and understand easily, as well as spell right or at least 'close enough'.

I knew a lady whose first name was Phebe. Everyone misspelled that because they wanted to put the "o" in there.

 

Well, it has been a few months and I thought I would give a brief update about life after taking Phoebe to the pound.....

Phoebe walked into our house around 21 Nov. 2017, and the trials and tribulations of her first couple of months have already been covered. She healed up well and fully from her pneumonia and was finally ready to go to the pound, which happened on..... well, funny thing but it has not quite happened yet. So many problems, so many obstacles but Phoebe is doing well, getting big, fitting into our little family quite nicely and just about ready to finally go to the pound! Maybe this week, or maybe next 'cause we have a fair amount of food for her still.

But while she is still here, she will now 'sing' when picked up, sleeps in bed at least 1/2 of each night (up against my lower leg), and is generally a great little cat. She has changed quite a bit, gotten far more affectionate and interacts well with us. She is just enough of a PITA to be amusing (waking Mom up at 3:00 AM by 'poking' Mom in the eye exactly four times with her paw, exactly as you would tap the should of a person you wanted to talk to- never any claws out either).

Frankly, I think this might be the greatest cat that there ever was in the world 'cause she has no fear, and no malice and yet has a temper and is fascinating to interact with. It has been a little bit of a struggle NOT to get attached to her before the trip to the pound but I think we have done nicely, especially me (Mom is kinda' sweet on the little thing).

I have the world's funniest video of her but cannot seem to get it out of Mom's iPhone and into the 'real digital' world to post but if / when I figure out how, I will post a link to it.

Anyway, everyone is well, and I am 100% confident whoever gets Phoebe from the pound will be getting a great pet, in good health, with a long and happy future.

I actually re-homed Cinnamon today. I am already worried if I did the right thing.

My grandson was sick today so mom brought him out for us to watch.
My grandson had a great time with the Cinnamon. Mom and 2 grandsons had supper with us tonight and both boys wanted to take her home and I relented. She has only been gone for an hour and I already miss her. If it doesn't work she will be back.
In return we get a miniature Yorkie. Good trade? I think not.

Jill is allergic unfortunately, and Holly (our dog) is the jealous type.

But that cat is a near spitting image of one we had quite the many years ago. She was named Periwinkle as she resembled a periwinkle blue color in the sunlight.

I wish you the best in the endeavor to "put up with" the cat until you can make it to the pound.

 

Yip Yip Yipee. Cinnamon is home. I was having second thoughts.
Our daughter called and said, "Come get this d!!!m cat. It bit me." Don't quit believe the whole story though.
On the down side, my respiratory problem has been good today. Don't know if you can be allergic to one cat. When I woke up this morning Onyx was laying beside me with my nose right in her fur. No problems. Plan to ask my MD that question. Started having problems when Cinnamon arrived.

 

Boy, the temps. hit 80F + and activity on this forum just about quits.

Just a quick Phoebe update: We have been struggling with finding just the right container to take her to the pound in WHEN SUDDENLY, she helped us out and picked out the container herself! Yep, she is going in a plastic bag full of yarn that she climbed into on her own after my wife put it down on the floor. One or two turns and her head popped out and there she lays.....



So we are almost ready for her big trip to the pound......

So my neighbor is feeding the stray cats around the area and of course it is resulting in more stray cats :-( On the way to use the grill in the garage tonight, I saw a gray and very slightly calico- marked cat scramble from the left of the garage and 'out'. Now we have seen this cat for some time and she was clearly pregnant. So I went in the direction she came from and ....... saw this:



Yep, mostly gray kittens, with a smattering of calico. So I moved the gasoline container across the garage, and put down dry food and clean water for Mama so she can <hopefully> nurse and raise the kittens. In my garage. Remember, I am the guy who does not want any cats. OK, so where we are: I left the garage door open about 6" for Mama cat to return and take care of the kittens. They are very young, their eyes are not open yet. So.... what to do. I put a bowl of dry cat food and a bowl of clean water down for Mama next to the plant pot (which is what that is- Mama cat dug enough dirt out of it so that it better fit her needs Notice the pile of dirt on the floor next to the pot.

So, RCBS, want a kitten? I would never ask but nature has put me in the spot and I guess I am putting you in the spot. No need to feel bad about saying 'No'. And you do not have to answer publicly if you do not want to: send me an e-mail or PM and I will treat it as private and not share it, honest.

I myself do not want any more cats. In fact, as you all well know, Phoebe is not even 'my' cat and is headed for the pound. So now I am chewing on what to do with there four kittens; if they do not go 'feral' on me and I can handle them, I will take all the males to the local pound where they stand a chance of survival. If I can catch Mama cat, I will have her spayed and return her to the wilds of my backyard.

But if there is a female in the bunch, and I grab it before it is fully weaned, I can bottle- feed and kinda' hand raise it so maybe I can have a cat that will lay in my lap. Phoebe abjectly refuses to do that; a wonderful cat, she is not paricularly human- orientated. Perhaps this is my chance to have a human - bonded cat? Anyway, will update as time goes on.

And I left the garage door open about 5" so Mama cat can return. Who knows, she may take the kittens to a "safer" place such as my Holz Hauz's. ??

Ouch.. kind of a bind to be in. I am glad to hear that you are helping mama and the kittens.

I agree with the spaying and "return to the wilds" of the neighborhood. Although it is not a cost that should be laid at your doorstep, or garage. It is a shame people don't take that into the thought process when bringing home cats (or dogs for that matter) and letting them wander outside. It's nature, and bound to happen that they will breed. They often don't want the kittens, and they end up taking them "out to the country", like that's where all unwanted cats belong.

On the plus side, you get your pick of the litter.

Hope the remodel is going smoothly.

Unfortunately I am allergic to cats.

 

Well, I guess I have two choices: 1) ignore them and 2) help them out. Seeing as (1) is not an option, that leaves (2). Sheesh! That said, I am NOT having five (5) cats in the house so that is out. I <may> take a female out of the litter for my own pet. That aside, I will do my best to make sure all four survive and if that takes eye- dropper feeding, so be it. But most or all of them will have to go, and not like Phoebe but REALLY go. But kittens are usually adopted pretty readily so I think I can find them homes.

The rebuilding of the house is going perfectly, thanks for asking- nothing at all happening until around 1 June when they crew shows up for siding. My broken wrist has really helped to slow things down :-( Still, no complaints, living in the land of plenty and living large, so nothing to whine about in reality. We ( and by that I mean family, Phoebe (0n her way to the pound), and even the interloping cat / kittens) are safe and sound so nothing to complain about.

Now the 'game is afoot' with me trying not to open the garage door too often and yet I want to check on those kittens.

What a dilemma to be in!!! Thank you for looking after the strays. Is there a discount vet service in your area to help with neutering/spay of stray cats? The shame of it is that any stray cat out there living wild raises havoc with bird populations but does keep the mice population down.
