Here is a big heap of firewood down under. Eucalyptus camaldulensis, or red gum. Overkill cubed. Wood envy...

.... though it is supposed to be smoky when burned. Sweeps claims only 18.4 Mbtu/cord, but I wood say that is too low (Sweeps is way off on a lot of wood species).

My Aussie friends tell me that the weight of red gum is more than 2x what Sweeps lists, at about 850 kg/m3 (6,770 lb/cord). So they are way off. Sweeps BTU list should be burned. Figure 34-36 MBtu per cord on that "pile".

With the grey on top and the red down a foot it sure does go to show why we should stack proper for drying

The wood on the bottom must get rotten/mildewed? That has been my experience with mounds of wood.

Normally with big piles like that they have a big loader they will stir the piles with to help it dry.

BTW, this stuff is selling for $176 AUD per ton plus 10% sales tax. That's $193.60 AUD per ton. Red gum weighs about 850 kilos per m3, which works out to about 1/3 of a cord per ton. So almost $600 a cord for red gum firewood, and 2x the cost of the equivalent in madrone firewood here (typically the best and most expensive firewood available in the PNW), split, dry and delivered.
