I do not have enough information to form an opinion because I am only hearing one side of the story.

I know here in the state of Maine, Ohio residents are targeted because for some reason opiates are streaming in from that state. Any infraction means a car with Ohio plates will be stopped and thoroughly checked. There are a few other states as well, but Ohio is a big one. I wonder if maybe there is a drug issue with Canada being where it stems from? That is another possible explanation besides "they hate Canadians", or , "they are out for your money".

I do know when I traveled abroad a lot, we were always told to obey even the speed limits, "You are a guest in their country" we were told. I think the worst people at this are American's actually, but even when it comes to speeding, I tried to abide by the speed limits laws. On the flip side though, I know it is easy to speed, or "go with traffic".

The officer is right though, a valid passport is needed with a driver license. She had a copy which sounds reasonable though...

Again, not enough information to make a judgement.

Sounds like an officer got up on the wrong side of the bed.

She got the bond money back but what about the cost of getting the car back? I would think the state would be liable for that.

I hate people that are always quick to sue but perhaps this one does need an attorney lest this same thing keep happening to people. Cripes, I've driven in Canada many times and I'd hate to think they could pull the same thing but just imagine what that would be like. I don't have a passport. What would I use for ID?

So wrong on so many levels, my apologies as an American rottiman . Here in NH (as well as Maine and VT) you can't kick a cat without hitting someone in the summertime from Quebec (where my family is from) or Ontario. All NH's "welcome to" signs all over the state are in French and English. :loco:

Sad to hear , I think part of it is because Georgia and South Carolina are notorious for speed traps on that corridor. From personal experience, was driving my cousin down with orders in Gulf War 1, 1991, to load armored vehicles onto a ship. And we got pulled over and detained, until retired General from the Army showed up and basically told the sheriff he outranked him and he was taking us with him PERIOD.

But to be fair, some of the speeding fines in Canada are a little extreme also. Like $10,000.

Well, firstly I hold dual citizenship (US/Can). In 30+ years of traveling north & south over the border many, many times, I only ran into one over-zealous LEO in upper New York state when heading back toward the border. He was all set to play his game until he found out I was a retired LEO from the states. He then flipped a switch and could not have been nicer.

In regard to "always told to observe the speed limit, your a guest in that country" I can attest after having traveled I 75 numerous times, that any one who would travel the speed limit stands a excellent chance of serious injury or death by being run over by the fools recreating Talledega one car length apart.

Georgia has always been known as a "speed trap" state for non-residents for MANY years. If I was a betting man, and former LEO, my money says she ran into "Wyatt Earp with PMS"................too bad she had to endure it. That could have been any ones Sister, Wife or Girl Friend.

Yes wife is dual citizen also, crossing the border, where I live can be weekly occurrence. Doing meet and greet or even going to dinner.
The talledaga reference reminds me of 401 around TO.
Canadians are generally very courteous kind people outside of Montreal and TO, but those are metropolitan areas.

Yeah this is Maine, we are surrounded by Canada and honestly Maine was stolen from Canada by all rights. I am not making that up, it is taught in Canadian schools, but sadly not ours. being the "lumber capital of the world' at the time had everything to do with it.

I still have a lot of family on both sides of the border...literally like only a few miles apart.

I see cars from Canada every day, and for the most part we all get along. I have traveled all over Canada and they are super nice in most every other providence, but those from Quebec tend to be rude...not here inside of Maine, but when we visit them. It really is too bad as Quebec and Quebec City is very pretty.

I thought though that to cross the border since 911, a person has to have a passport?

Gotcha; Maine has been fighting the Feds over that for type of license for years so that is why I was confused.

I don't know if I have one or not???

I know at one time my 84 year old Grandfather needed to renew his Maine Drivers License, but needed a birth certificate, but he was born in Canada and that was where it was. he could not get into Canada because he had no Passport, it was a huge Catch 22...

So he went to get his license and the regular workers up front had him wait for a supervisor. Now you have to know my Grandfather, he talks pretty plain...

So the Supervisor asks if he was the 84 year old guy that wanted a drivers license renewed. My Grandfather says, "Do you see any other 84 year old guy around that wants to truck wood?"

The guys says, "I would love to chat with you more, you sound really interesting, but I am really busy, but we'll renew your license."

I could not believe this myself, but my Adopted Sister who has Down Syndrome is 22, but has issues. Anyway, my Mom got sick of driving her to work, so she tried for her license...5 times and failed. So the 6th time my Mom called and asked if the drivers test could be modified.

    THEY DID!!

They eliminated the merging into traffic with a yield, parallel parking, and parking on a hill with a curb.

I could not believe it! So much for standards. She does not drive far, just to work (about 15 miles), but I would have never though certain drivers get modified driving tests!! That is scary...and wrong.
