Its more than likely a pin oak. Pin oaks go further west than red oaks. But both are planted outside their regular growing areas. Both are in the red oak family.
I picked up some of this here as well. Someone suggested pin oak to me. It smelled pretty terrible when I split it.
I have neither. I dot really care I guess but was curious. I can pick out a lecannamd hickory easy and many others but sub species of Oak throw me. Just know they are oak and that’s always good enough. Thank you for the reply !
Brought a plank in the house to make a sign out of and wife thought the dog had an accident somewhere.
That sounds like oak. Smells like stinky feet. Sour! I've been hauling red oak in all week. With this rain and low pressure its all I can smell outside right now.
Yup. I’m extremely east of you, found a very...whew..stinky rail of red oak that was a skid beam. Couldn’t have smelled anything worse at the time. It doesn’t grow here but I found that this kind of wood is likely the most smelly. Had a madrona that smelled like toe cheese but the oak had it beat.
Nah. Smells like a warm house... I had to stack next to the house for now till I get a new spot set up to stack. Got an old shed that needs taken out to make room for the 4 and 5 year plan.
From my experience, Northern Red Oak splits easily and is not stringy. I would think you have pin oak there.
Most likely it is pin oak but that is usually darker than red oak. The bark tends to be smoother than red oak and is one of the telling signs. Also many, many more limbs on most all pin oak and at the bottom of the tree the limbs tend to point down and die off. A bit tougher to split than red oak and yes, a bit more odor to it but in time you come to enjoy the smells of oak too. I for one would much rather smell oak than cottonwood. Red oak in first picture then pin oak in next two.
I love the smell of oak , whatever oak I usually cut. but this is juts a little different. It must be Pin, I cut a bunch of trees and found it odd this is my first Pin Oak I have came across. Bark is definitely smoother than what I am use to. Thanks for the information
