Picked up a 1/2 cord of this on roadside. Splits really easy. Thanks, Doug

Looks kind of like cherry to me, or at least some other fruit tree if not that?

Bark looks like black cherry. But the center of the wood is too dark.

Yeah I don't know. The white ring around the outside throws me off, too.

I am with yall too . I noticed the white sapwood, and the oddly colored darker heart. Which is why I put the comment about some other fruit tree if not cherry.

I do think it's a very good chance it's in the Rosaceae Family.

Don't know but, the few Apples that I have split didn't split that straight.
I could be in the cherry court though.

We may have it in the very tip in the appalachain foot hills but that's a totally different forest composition than where I live.

Just looked at a range map. It goes right to our northern border in the moutains. Except there is a very small island of it in the state that looks like it's in York County which is to the east of Spartanburg. Very random small island of it, but basically we don't have it.

I'm not sold on apple. The sap and heart could very well be but the bark is throwing it off a bit. DSC00924.JPG

It looks like the wood is ring-porous, so that would rule out cherry. The color is close to red elm but the bark is wrong.

Given your location and the color I’m guessing it’s some kind of hickory but that’s a wild guess.
