2 things that rank pretty darn high on my list. The day started early, 4:30 am, to head to dad's and then to the airport to load up the plane for Indy Honor flight. The Honor flight organization flies veterans to DC for free. They get to see the monuments commemorating their contributions to thus great country, get a front row seat at the changing of the guard ceremony and get treated the way they deserve to be. The current focus is WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans. Dad and I are volunteers, as is everyone involved in this organization. Our role is to take this trailer full of wheelchairs and whatever else they would need throughout the day, get it into the plane, and then reverse the process that night. Awesome organization! Check out if there's one around you and get involved if you would like. In between long waits at the security gate today I got in a bit of cutting also First load I was getting down to the smaller part of the log so the heartwood blocks were getting smaller, but I'm finally through working on the steep slope thank goodness. load 2 I got back on the big end of another log, didn't have time to fill the truck all the way on load 2 unfortunately. But the logs aren't going anywhere so I'll get back at em maybe next Saturday. Lots of solid heart wood but about 2 inches of punky junk around the edges on these. Keep choppin that wood!
Did you go to Home Depot and cut a pile of 4x4s for that? Nice splitting! Also good on ya for doing the Honor Flights work. Very noble cause. Thinking about trying to get my grandfather on a flight this summer. God Bless all of our veterans and those still in harm's way (and their support network!) today.
Practice practice practice, I used to split triangles until I got on here and got introduced to cribbing the ends of the stacks. Now I try to make square(ish) splits and my stacks look alot better
Great that you are involved in this Boogeyman and then you also got some firewood too! A great day indeed.
Awesome to hear about these flights, and thanks to you and dad for all you're doing. You got some nice wood there.
Great service you do for the Vet's. Thank you. Nice splitting as well, we do a lot of squares with the splitter, but it would take me a fair bit of practice to do it "free hand".
I read about this program before. Didn't realize they also try to squeeze it into one day there and back. That's a long day and some hustling.
Great for you Boogeyman My Dad was a WWII Vet and went on an Honor Flight along with 2 of his brothers that served in WWII. He talked about that trip up until the day he passed. My sister in Anchorage has also volunteered to help on the flights. I believe she has made at least 1 trip to DC helping the Vets. Great program.
It is a long day for the vets and for the guardians that go with them. Some of them are in amazing shape still too, we had a 94 year old on this last flight that was outpacing his guardian at the homecoming party without a problem. Several others are still walking around by the time they get home also, if I'm still walking in my 90s I'll be pretty happy, if I'm still walking after a big day like that in my 90s I'll be really happy
I'm very glad to hear that he enjoyed it so much! Those stories are big motivators for us, knowing that these guys and gals appreciate it and have a great time is alot of what it's about for us. I haven't been on the trip myself but I would love to go one of these times.
I walk with my dog nearly every single day when I get home. Winter is the time I lag, and don't commit. Every spring, I realize my mistake. The walk actually gets more difficult. Each spring I do advance, because I make it one distance, then keep going. You only lose if you stop. Those that have come before us have been through more than we will generally imagine. They deserve all the respect given to them. They have survived... And that is the reason they don't stop walking.
