Yea they have those here I think you have to get them from your cell provider? I need one but I am not a techie so I am not sure if I can just buy an aftermarket one and it will work? The verizon ones are close to $100 used on ebay.

Wilson Electronics brand here (amazon). I tried two different versions from Verizon over the last few years, not enough repeating or amplifying or whatever to help.

My last phone was a galaxy knockoff made by ZTE (Vitale/Supreme)and it was good for a year and then it got full, nothing worked since there was no space, was only an 8gb phone, now your may be larger? Battery died and I had to carry 2 or 3 batteries during the day. It was fast at first but the more it was full the slower and more glitchy it got.

So it does not have to be network specific?

Where you expect to be using it for more than a phone, then ergonomics comes into play. IE: ease of use typing and reading. The smaller in size it is, the smaller the keyboard and display are. I'd suggest going to a store and test drive a few. If there's a Verizon store nearby, head there and take a look at what's offered. They have most of the smartphones that are on the market. Just let them know you are not ready to buy, just fact-finding.

I have the Motorola Android mini. It's fine. Fits in my pocket comfortably.

We use Verizon and have the smallest data plan, 1gig that's shared between my wife and I. We hardly ever use the "smart" part of it(web and web-apps) without being on a wifi network. We have Garmin GPS devices when traveling, so there's no use of the data plan when on the road. We started out with a 3gig plan, and downgraded after a month when we were able to see how much data we actually used.

The network you ultimately end up with, will be determined by what's in your area and it's coverage.

    Good luck

I got a Verizon network extender for the house. Love it! (Cost me $200 but i save $50 per month by cancelling the land line.)
Before , I could only make a call while standing at the back door. Now, full service in and around the house outside.
And of course , the WiFi works for surfing the web on the fone.

I'm on my second Galaxy S6. Works great, but I think it word be better if the battery was replaceable

Backwoods Savage, I posted elsewhere, but i'll say it here for everyone. It really is a Stihl vs Husky thing. Both Apple and Android will work!! You are a highly intelligent and tenacious individual, I have no doubt you will figure it out!!

    Advice
    1. Put up cell extender
    2. Get type of phone friends/family you talk to most have. Meaning, if Judy talks to xx a lot and they have apple get an Apple and use face time, its like a video conferencing.

Either Apple or Android you can get refurbished unlocked phones off internet cheap. Just do not do the plan phone of 25 dollars a month to your bill for 2 years.

You can get the same thing on android, it's called hangouts. and now on other verizon phones (maybe only other androidd??) can use a "video call" which I can switch in and out of that allows me to see them and them me.

Yeah, I understand that, clemsonfor, but you got to convince every apple user you want to chat with to get that APP. I was thinking maybe their grandchildren or family members. Whereas every Apple product has FaceTime and storage is an issue.

That is correct. Just wanted to point out that Apple is not the only phone that you can see who you talk too.

Hey what can I say, I'm from the south, we like redundancy ...."All Yall":D

And what can I say. I still call it "taping" even though it's on my DVR. Had a manager about 10 years my senior point that out to me when I said it. I just laughed. Still say tape.

The service provider is a regional thing. You have to get the best that's in your area. Around here, ATT is great, probably the best. Go to my cousin's in Sparta, Tomah Wisconsin, and if you don't have us cellular, you'll have zero signal in rural areas.

I know you're trying to be funny, but some folks could be led astray. Make no bones about it, anything an iPhone can do, an Android can do, and has probably been available for a longer time on Android. Both Androids and iPhones can do a lot of stuff, but iPhone you are limited to what apple will allow you. Android has no such limitations. IPhones also cost more and have hardware limitations.

    Both are easy to use.

Both can be hands off and need no amount of tech savviness. However, Android allows you get techie if you want.

Hangouts works great. You can even call like a phone, from a non cellular device, like a WiFi only tablet. I keep in touch with my family with Hangouts. I had to explain to a co-worker how Hangouts works.

Yep we used it on my sons tablet when I would be out of town and he was little so that he could see me each night before bed. We had a $20 android tablet that the wife would talk to me on. Of course camera quality was not good on it but that was not the fault of the android or hangouts, just the price point of the device we had. That also a good thing about android they have something for everyone. Everything from $20 smart phones to $800 phones.
