This is un scientific but it seems my androids have better service than the iphones. I say this cause I had a ZTE smart phone on Virgin and my brother had iphone on the same. He had to have his phone in a certain spot in my house to text where I could somewhat talk and I could text almost no problem, we'll a few failed attempts but I didn't have to have my phone where his was.

And now I am in verizon aND have samsung, my mother in law has iphone and verizon, she says she can't text at my house and calls are a no go. I have no issue with texts at all now and I can talk at the house but it does cut out. So this is why I say what I do...I personally thing Androids have better reception.

All this said, I wonder if there is someone who has an older phone they would give or loan you so you can get the feel of what you like. If I had a decent one I would but the battery life on my old one sucks (it's a ZTE) and even though there seveal of them there not great anymore. They will activate any phone for used even if used. And you can change you plan unlike you used to be able to do years ago .

also I went prepaid, its cheaper to me and I am not locked to them for a year or two. I can go to tracphone if I want since I own my phone and I only am only tied to them per month. The bad thing is to change you have to reset the phone so that's a hasstle.

So long as you stay with a brands flagship model, going back a few generations wont be a bad thing. That said newest opinions I'd look at on androd are the Google pixel, LG g6 or V30, Motorola has a couple, & Samsung s9.

Unless it's apple, it's an Android now. Windows phones are pretty much obsolete. My wife has a windows phone, and it's a steaming pos. They are not supported anymore.

Apple phones are overpriced, and over rated. As far as functionality, no iphone matches what Androids can do. You can make Android look just like an iPhone button wise if you want. But typically the Android phones are simply better, due to hardware and os reasons.

You don't need the newest flagship phone. My phone is a flagship phone from late in 2014. Just now it's it starting to give me battery issues from time to time.

Samsung makes good phones, but there's plenty of other options. The Nokia6 is $200 and a great phone. We got my mom one to replace her Galaxy s3. There's great new Motorola phones for as low as 80-$100.

Your biggest obstacle will be cellular signal at your location and I dont think your in a strong area for AT&T. I was surprised, given the circumstances on how fast my battery drained at your house... I was on it quite often trying to read and download pictures... I can usually get by with charging it every day and a half to two days...
I see that there is a lot of love for Iphone out there...:D... But I've had the 3, 4,5,6 and now I'm got the 7... The battery is a non issue for me, the internal memory is a non issue for me... I've got about 2800 pictures and 127 videos and songs on my phone and I'm only using 41 GB so far with all the other stuff that uses memory... I gave my dad my old Iphone 6 and he loves it, heck he even taught mom how to use it... She loves it so much that she basically has stopped using her brand new flip phone, so I'll probably be getting her a Iphone in the near future... But as most things in life, pay for it once and get what you want, otherwise you'll be kicking yourself wishing you had...:handshake:

First off, we use Straight Talk, no problems- anywhere; you could look at those AARP plans for lower monthly costs, Dennis. We each pay $35/month, and use WiFi whenever we can, only ran over once.
Fire Flake got me an iPhone 5S two years ago, still supports updates, great all around. Had problems surfing FHC on an LG Android, but not anymore on the iPhone.
I got her an iPhone 6 this past Black Friday for $130.... she left her Samsung S3 (or Galaxy, I can’t recall) and never looked back.

I will second what he said. Like I said I have the Flagship phone the Galaxy s5. I have replaced my battery once. Well more but I got knock off batteries but not intentionally. And the reason it went out was a software issue when the OS updated and it started to eat battery. The fix was a factory reset. Verizon and Samsung had no solution other than that. It worked and stoped draining the batter 3 to 4x a day. So all those charge cycles killed that original.

I never considered a windows phone or ever have that's why I had no idea about them, just they existed.

Also it's a chevy or ford thing with the iPhone and Samsung thing. I think there better but that's me. They do have better everything to me, and I can have split screens on my phone unless the newest apple does that they still don't do that and my phone is 3 or 4 years old. The glass that is on the iPhone I am pretty sure is first used on galaxy or designed by them or something. Again I don't geek out on this stuff that much..

ATT is another on that sucks!! In a city they may be ok. But around here it is lost. Text messages can barely find people around here.

Even my buddy in Charleston SC has dropped calls all the time with ATT. They must be great in big cities or somewhere but there network is terrible most places in this state. Verizon is the main one around here and there is still lots of places without signal. But verizon has had the best coverage around here for over 20 years.

thewoodlands my iPhone has a Wi-fi assist setting, it automatically uses some mobile data when the Wi-fi signal is poor. It's in the mobile data menu, check that you have it turned off, that should stop having to turn off your mobile data every time you use Wi-fi.

On an iPhone it can be found at the base of the mobile data settings page.

I didn't read all the posts but here'a my two cents,
iPhone: Simplest interface, but reeally expensive and not very flexible
Samsung: Best screens by far, moderately flexible and almost as expensive as an iPhone
Google, LG, etc. Niche markets, for example the current Google Pixel has the best camera.

So, for overall ease of use, I would recommend an iPhone slightly over a Samsung. All the rest are for specialized/niche users.

Dennis in your situation I would consider getting a cell signal booster for the house. They are basically a small repeater for cell phones. There are plenty of them here down under.
I am sure they would be legal and available in North America.

For simplicity of use for a Luddite like myself iPhone seems to be most intuitive & user friendly to me.

Agreed! Not just for the GTG though, more for Dennis & J's reception out there year round. We put in the same (slightly different antenna) at our home, took us from zero communication to reliable texts and 60% of phone calls work here too now. WWW put our antenna on the tip top of our roof on the side of the concrete block chimney, you had many friends climbing higher than that on trees last weekend, no doubt one of them will mount it on your chimney/roof and run the cable for you to get into your home to the square white box pictured above that mounts on the ceiling (or in our case sits on top of a kitchen cabinet). Sometimes pictures take forever to send but other times they go through quickly. Either way Backwoods Savage, just use put the USB end of the power charger on whatever new phone you get into your computer and you can save all you photos there, and you can look at them on the bigger screen on your computer, then send or delete or save or whatever.

Couple other items that I came across, do you still have a landline? Or did your DSL change it to VOIP? Here 911 can go to a true landline, but I had to triple register on our emergency broadcasts with both our cells and our previous landline (now VOIP) incase of emergency, wildfires, whatever. Ok, regardless of what you do or do not end up with, pls register here if you have not :) Emergency Notification Registration your home phone, emails, and cell phone numbers.

I tried to find coverage in your area for Verizon, ATT, and Tmobile/Sprint, they all show very good coverage but I do not know exactly where you are and there are many little pockets of poor cell service, I really think a personal cell phone antenna as leo listed above and like we put in will be more helpful with your phone be it your current phone, or a new one regardless of which carrier you choose.

Heck, you and J could text eachother when you're out and about instead of the two way radios, ( but go ahead and use the walkie talkies if you plan on pranking her about falling at the mailbox again  )

I use the best phone I can get for less than $50. The current one, a ZTE Android, is a great phone, got it free.
