Well I missed out on the PA opener Saturday morning. My brother and Dad gave it a try though and saw two birds and heard very little action. So I got a chance to give it a shot in the morning so I’m up at camp listening as we speak! No sign of them yet but tons of deer! Stay tuned....
Not a darn peep this morning!!!! So I cut some wood instead. Massive amounts of winter storm damage at our place.
It's been a terrible year so far. A couple gobbles on the roost then radio silence. Going to try it again Wednesday AM.
Anyone want to guess who shot their first Nebraska Merriam? I'll give you a hint, it's me! Watched this guy strut across the road for 1.5 hours, waited about 4 hours in all and it came down to the last 5 seconds when I shot, he crossed the fence a few times and was about 3 steps from just going to far for me comfort with our backdrops, shot him with the 2 brother in law's sitting next to me watching the whole thing go down. Absolutely phenomenal trip! 4 birds in 4 days between 3 guys. Could've been tagged out entirely in one shot, I had 8 red heads in my red Dot from 20-30 years, all lined up in a row. Couldnt bring myself to do it though .
Congrats on a successful hunt weekend. Yeah, but there's not as much sport in that. Would have made for a phenomenal story though.
Ny opener today! Tons of gobbling, a little calling, one pizzed off hen oh yeah and these... Dad and I doubled this morning! Unfortunately his took a flop into some water
Do you skin or pluck your birds?? Some years ago we raised 3 turkeys and plucked them at harvest. Wasn't as bad as I'd heard it would be, but still a pain to get all the small pinfeathers out.
Just skin it and part it all out. Much easier than trying to get all the fuzz. Not to mention it makes for more meals when it’s all packaged separate.
Super full in my 12 gauge and extra full in my 10 gauge. They’ve got all sorts of custom fancy chokes as well. Some of these new shells and chokes will throw basketball size patterns at 60 yards !!!
Well, this was pretty much the worst turkey season ever. Spent a LOT of time in the woods and saw exactly one male bird, 80 yards away for about 60 seconds. There's always next year.
This one was stopping traffic this morning. Saw him an hour later about 30 feet away and not too scared.
Most of the month of May and then a couple week season in October. Just think.... that was almost our national bird!
