Advice and opinions on purchasing 1999 GMC suburban

Time to tap into the FHC knowledge consortium....
I'm looking at a 1999 suburban up for auction vin 1gkgk26j3xj78955. It's a municipal vehicle supposedly stored inside with 52,606 original miles. 454 v8 3/4 ton 2500. It could have 20,000+ 2 mile trips... looks nice no rust or damage well taken care of. Any opinions are welcomed.

Most of those fleet vehicles are usually taken well care of, unless it was from a small one that was short on funds, or the assigned driver never did the PM. And yea it will have mostly short trips on it with those miles. We get rid of our trucks at 75k or 10 years. Which for means for me I rotate one out ever 4 years. Now the last 2 trucks I drove will probably ly be good for someone, but the lion share of our trucks have hard miles on them and driven my many folks that don't care. Some even would think I'm rough on my work truck, but it's a tool to get the job done, not a show car or garage kept show truck.

I'd look at 2 things.
1.. your need
2.. their price

In NY a rust free vehicle has value irregardless of mileage.

 

Rust free..... I sometimes think Wisconsin is a cheese state because it makes Swiss cheese out of vehicles.

 

It's a auction so the price is ?? Comes from a well to do township. I have a 98 1500 suburban that's a little too far gone to redo. It became my son's first car, a little bit big so a few creases from backing up... And rust. I'm pretty familiar with wrenching on that era of gm truck. Plus the big block doesn't have as many issues as a 5.7 does. Wife needs a vehicle and I can't, don't, won't have a car payment. So..

 

Go for it................the Oil companies will love you. Depending what the gearing is it could be "REAL THIRSTY".

 

Might have hard miles...or might have a bunch of short trip city miles...either way it kinda makes the mileage reading irrelevant. The city I work for often sells their vehicles at about 10-15 years old. The mileage is normally not very high, but the engine hours can be high...real high...our service trucks can spend a lot of time idling due to the need to run 4 way flashers/strobe lites/2 way radios, etc

 

Well my daily driver is a 01 3500 with the 8.1..…. could only get better from here.

 

I was a volunteer firefighter years ago, well aware of low miles high hours. A day of training meant 3 miles but 6 hours running.

 

Yeah, auctions can be tricky.
Sometimes it's nearly given away, other times people act like it's gold plated.

I agree with the car payment.
That's why I drive a '96 Eldorado that I paid $2200 for nearly 4 years ago.

I like the looks of the car, and the price was right. I figure I should be able to get another 5 yrs out of it.

 

They call those barn doors and there the desirable ones

 

I drove a 1998 k2500 ext cab pickup in the early 00s about 04. It idled some of the day when we sat in it and was almost all off road miles on that truck, many in 4wd , at that time I don't think it had 50k on it. Best that truck with the 454 would do was 8mpg

 

Thank god my wife works from home and my shop is only 5 miles away. Otherwise gas would kill me.

 

They called them rotted around here. That always seemed to be the first thing to go on the double-door suburbans.
I'd imagine its because of the aero effects of the vehicle, combined with the wet, salty brine after they salt the roads. It circulates back up and coats all parts of the back doors. Those things don't seem to last many years.

 

Suburban 2500....If it appears to be in good shape, I would bow out at the max bid of $2500, maybe a bit more if it is 4x4

 

Holy cow suburban are reasonable in OH ! Yes it's 4x4

 

Just to let you know, I have no idea what the truck is worth in Oh...that is just what I would top out at on a truck I know nothing about (plus, I am poor). 4wd, I would go up to $3300 max. Good luck with your decision

 

Well.. let's change that up a bit..

I would be willing to offer much more than $2500 if that is a solid vehicle, and what I was interested in purchasing.

In 2000 we bought a used '96 GMC 1500 4x4 for $13,000. It had over 100K in miles, but was a great truck.

Now.. you are looking at a '98 vehicle. I certainly wouldn't go anywhere near that price range now. But I'd figure the vehicle in good shape would be worth around $4,500-5,500 give or take about $1-2K depending on the vehicle. If it is 4x4, that will always increase the price.

But then again, that would be MY price point.. not necessarily yours..
