Dave you have a good situation there. Rather than covering each plant in case of frost you could cover the whole garden with a tarp draped over that fence.

An easier way to dodge the frost is to set up the sprinkler. Usually the frost will hit really early in the morning so if you set the alarm and get up about 2 hours before sunrise and turn the sprinkler on, it will keep the frost away. This is what we do many times with fruit trees too and it works.

No escaping taxes for sure but some are more excessive than others. They keep raising every year too so imagine what it will be like in another 25 years!

I remember when Judy and I got married and our first tax bill was around $35. We had a nice 2 story home and 2 car garage on 2 acres on a paved road. Then one year we complained because several miles from us they cleaned out a section of the creek that cut through a corner of our property and out taxes doubled that year. A shock to us at the time.

Now I know a couple that has a home very similar to what we had and maybe an acre more. They pay a couple thousand in land taxes and last year they got hit with a $5,000 bill for drainage when they cleaned a creek that starts right by their place. Times and taxes change.

I agree with that 100%. Too early and they just sit there. Tomatoes love heat and hate cold. milk bottles filled with water and sat around the plants will help hold the heat at night. I lay my plants on their side, roots facing south, then cover with soil up to the top two sets of leaves. The stalk that is buried will develop a strong root system and benefit for the sun warming the soil. No mulch this time of year as that prevents the soil from warming. Another thing that helps is that white cover that goes over plants. It will increase them temp an average of 10 degrees.

Do you grow short bush type tomatoes ?
I've never found tomato cages to be big enough for (most) tomatoes but have used them for peppers and eggplants.

Yup, Try this... I'm on a little more than a 1/4 acre and a very humble 2000 sqft home, I get "Nothing" but trash pick up and my property taxes are $4300.00 a year, soon to go up as soon as the new Nazi Governor signs in the new tax code.

You're as south as you can get in the garden state so I think you will be alright. Like mentioned previously, if the temps dip, tomato plants will just hibernate until it warms up again. I planted spinach in the fall and never ripped them out just put 6" of leaves on top. This spring the plants looked perfect. Probably would have tasted bitter so I just tilled them under. I am about 3 hours from you. My plant date for tomatoes and peppers is May 15th. I'll be down in Cape May County surf fishing in two weeks!

Even if it was spelled wrong, it would still be a correct statement, no? We just would have had a hell of a lot more fun with it!
