Hello guys I am need of a new Bar&chain was thinking of going for 20"verse the 16"I have now any thoughts?
I have an 029 that loves the 16, does well with the 18, but I don't know how well it do with a 20. Might be all it would want.
I’m the odd ball out as I see no issue on the smaller Husky 445 with a 20” bar with .325 chain... but then again, I’m not trying to win any races either.
I think all the 029's, even the 029Supers (more displacement vs the regular 029) have. 325 chain on them. I've always run a 16" b&c on my 029Super. Heck, even my neighbors new stihl pro saw 362, has .325 and a 16" bar. I almost swapped chains on the new 362 and my 029S as the two saws were cutting nearly identical in the Austrian pine I was cutting. He had new stihl green chainchai I had new stihl yellow chain.
I gotcha big hard-wood baby... I don’t have any ported or even muffler-modded saws and cut oaks when they become available... so since I love that oak smell, I guess it’s a win-win for me.... a little slower in the cut = more lovely oak smell
I got two bigger saws with 20" but anything else goes with 15" bars and with 3,7PS the 029 seems to be a 15"-16" candidate. Thats at least how i would do it,with the 20" it would lose its bite id say.
Thanks fellow wood guys for the info. Yes I am planning on cutting slab wood and also soft wood(cedar, spruce) type stuff with the 20"bar.I am building a rack which I can load and cut from one side and with the 16"bar I am only cutting 13"at best since I loose the length with the log spikes & the rack I am building. If I go with 20"bar I can make it 16"wide(between the side) which will allow me more pieces per loading.
