Finally the promised Oak made its way homebound - so i did some choppin this afternoon. Chopped of the bark so the rain can washout the tannin for a wee while. It will dry a bit better... and it looks prettygood too. Gonnae dump the rest into the uglie box, dont wanna waste it as i think its just perfect for the start of the season. Size wise (X25), in total it must be close to a cord... 3sqm i guess (1cord/3.5sqm) Anyone up for counting? Id say a 150 years at least.
When you are filling your cage, do you stick your splits through the square openings? Is it an easy job? Do you use a ladder to fill it to the top? What were the dimensions of the metal fencing that you used? Being short on land myself, I see the advantages of going vertical.
Good for you HolsatiaRedneck ! That is a heck of nice stack, do you plan to top cover it to keep the rain/snow out?
I like the tower too. Really like the tower. Must have my own tower ... must ... get ... tower ... I don't think there'd be any problem getting the splits out. The holes are considerably bigger than the diameter of the splits. Should be able to wriggle them out from about head height or even lower, and the ones higher will just drop down nicely once a gap opens up. Worst case scenario you can just undo whatever joins the two ends at the back and let 'er collapse.
Course you don’t need the wire... Unstacking hasn’t been an issue for me... Cause I can’t bring myself to burn it!
HolsatiaRedneck that had to be a lot of work removing all that bark. Amazing. Is that tower where it will get wind? For sure that will help the drying.
That fencing looks an awful lot like concrete reinforcing mesh. It makes awesome tomato plant cages also.
Awritey Troops! Thanks for all the comments! Ill try to answer everyone as best as i can. Only for the 1st 2 layers, so i got a decent base - the rest will find its way by air . But ill reach through it to stack some of it at the outer side. Sizewise i think its something like 2.5x3.5 meters but you can use any size. Thanks buddy, not bad for a slacker eh?! Yep will do, by the end of summer with a few dry days. Until then the rain will wash out the tannin (the blackstuff on your axe when splitting oak) its supposed to dry quicker that way also to burn better. Im no scientist buts thats what i read somewhere, the 1st half of the tube is allready there since novemeber i think. Exposed to the weather, its has cracks allready and alot of the blackstuff got washed out...wood looks a bit pale Thats one way Billy - some folks, use in addition a lashing strap to controll it. Ill gonnae take the trusty boltcutter and cut some 1squarefoot windows into it and take it out. And next time i refill it, there will be a wee woodendoor to close it. Another way would be this... Google (pictures): Eichhörnchen am Meisnknöddel Yeah thats what im gonna do - ill post some pics of it in 2020 damm right Sir! You did it the propper way and its good looking. I just dont have the Space for what we call Holzmiete/ you would call it Holzhausen. So i did it the slackerway, with a little help of my steelgrit buddy By the way i wouldnt burn it either - looks real pretty. Yes Sir, its facing south and wind comes from different angles. It aint too bad as i used a car tire on the chopping block. I reckon goin through 5 cords this way would be a different story - but with enuff time and patients on your hand id say its achievable. Thats right Paul, comes cheap and its available. Good hint, incase i grow tomatoes in the near future, i will remember. I hope i covered everything. Thanks and keep hoarding!
Coming up with a plan... another day another failure like. Reshaping the plan. Wet feet sucks! Enuff Duty for today. Prost!
