I will watch these shows from time to time and one thing I can tell you is that I do not like the way they go about there investigating. Some of the things they say....and tactics they use....haven't seen anything like that before! :picard:

Just as a point of information, "modern" stats are designed to fail in the "open" position so you can still drive the vehicle. Don't know how far back it goes, but my '02 Trailblazer has this

Yup and this typically leads to a p0128 code. The Intrigue had the early dexcool and many vehicles ( s10 blazers especially) did not have the coolant system filled properly at the factory causing some corrosion (rust) to start in the engine during shipping and then sitting at the dealerships. The dexcool long life capabilities were based on being inert to corrosion until needed later in the vehicles life. When corrosion started early in the cars life the dexcool would attack it and then "dust up" and clog systems early on. Also as vehicles got older and no one flushed the coolant systems they would clog up pretty good. Be sure to try to flush out the heater core. I worked for Texaco Inc. which developed dexcool.
We used to use a Boraxo product to clean up transmission fluid or oil in the coolant system. Otherwise we would use a good coolant flush product (prestone), remove the t stat and repeatedly to flush system before replacing the stat. . Sounds like your on the right path Cleanfire.

    Doggy

Its more of an amusement of watching some of the dumb azzes they encounter.

As always things arent always as they seem "for the camera"

    Queue the Drum "bah-dum-bump." Thanks G! :p

x2! Thanks much to you both, with the info. about the Thermostat, radiator, and DexCool coolant, everything I've found so far makes sense - I feel much better going into this service now.

Same here ivanhoe - Thanks for the post: old-school commercial grade Cascade brand powered dish detergent, w/ TSP - have seen that used several times on old big-block v8's & Diesels to clean out coolant systems. * I may have a source for some: will find out this week.

Without spending a fortune on "MacGuyver'ism" ... I'm gonna try to clean each system one-by-one, starting w/ the Radiator - the eventual overheat is only happening after the vehicle is fully heat-soaked / sitting for a period of time, it seems like a classic "coolant system restriction" problem here.

I can "coax" the temp. back down when the gauge starts to climb up, by tossing it in (P)ark or (N)eutral and revving the engine up to 1.5/2 k for about a minute w/ cooling fans on High, to force more coolant -> to circulate through the system.

I will do a flow test on the Radiator before, and after cleaning, to gauge whether a radiator re-core or new Rad. is needed.

    --
If I can get the Radiator & Heater Core clear & flowing well - I'll feel much better before trying any flush/clean procedure on the motor: with the (closed-system) it uses, watching temp. rise via ECT sensor on the OBDII scanner, while warming up, is cause for concern: it's pretty rapid at the moment. We'll see how it goes.

Didn't know that Sub, and found & read the article posted: it's unfortunate that operation was even considered for being filmed / televised, it certainly didn't help put the agency in a good public light. It's too bad, because there are many excellent Wardens there doing good work, from what I've seen on the show.

Yeah, and I'm one of them: thinking back on the times we've visited my folks in FL, when the girls were little fishing off the dock, and my Dad handing me his fishing pole, while he went to grab some Beers - guess who was fishing illegally.. :( Never gave it a thought at the time. :picard: ... The things you think of, years later. :emb:

Gotta dash - have a Fun day everyone!

Not sure if this applies to your situation but if coolant hasn't been diluted in water/coolant ratio to a reasonable % it can impede flow and heat soaking properties.

If it comes to that, don't bother w/ a re-core.......a brand new one from Rock Auto is only $86

You can also try radiator cooling liquid......usually lowers temp 15-25*. For those that don't know, it's basically liquid soap. It reduces surface tension on the interior surfaces of the cooling system making the coolant more effective. About $6 from rock auto. We use it in racing.

It's certainly possible ivanhoe - the coolant leaks were there before purchase, I have no idea how long (suspect awhile) / or what went into the system before then. Everything since has been 50/50 mix, that I can confirm.

But was the original "soup" completely drained & flushed out before adding the 50/50 ?

That's a great idea Pete - have used LubeGuard trans. products in the past w/ the Taurus, with excellent results.

I'm going to order some now.

Yes, as best as possible, given the initial Thermostat change-out was at the Dealer the car was purchased from, with the Thermo. assembly out of vehicle, and back-flushed through the upper radiator hose port (top of block) for about 3-5 minutes, until it ran clear, at my request.

I was satisified (at the time) all old fluid & suspended junk in the block was flushed, it was tough to see (what) came out, as it was flowing out of the thermo block at a good clip, onto a dirty concrete floor. The interior passages of the thermo block looked excellent / factory clean.

    * I still have to pull the top radiator hose and take a look on that side though. I'll report back what I find.

So critical to use the correct coolant. Good luck on your project.

I know people who just dump in whatever. Their system must look like jello. They don’t care because they trade in every 3 years.

I saw a custom dodge pickup from the late 80s today. Was diesel so I’m guessing mechanical fuel injection from that era. Restored with a nice wooden bed. Had a big rig muffler on the passenger side. Neater than $hit.

    No they're not.

A warden tried to talk my middle son, a bait dealer, in to letting them film him pulling his sucker nets during the spring run. My son told the warden to go f**k himself. He didn't want half the state of Maine seeing how het sets and pulls his nets. At that point the warden started giving him a hard time about where his net was, the size of it, etc. They aren't the nice guys they appear to be on camera.

When asked what he was doing one morning during bird season my Father told the wardens he was digging spuds.
