Read if you want, skip to the pictures if you would rather Started out the day with plans to go cut some black locust for fence corner posts. On my way out to my parents property my father in law called and asked if I wanted to drop some trees for him, knowing which trees these were I quickly changed my plans for the day. There are several dead standing red oaks by his house and a couple ash that will be dead soon if not already. We talked over each tree and what would be the best direction to fall it, then cleared the areas around the bases and escape routes. I'm not crazy about working on the steep hillside covered in leaves, but it's not like i can move the trees first either. I took my time notching, making sure I was aiming the fall the best I can because I didn't want to damage other trees or have leaners being that there is a driveway right next to where I was working. The first red oak I dropped had a really slow fall and of course hung up on a small branch, but luckily after just a couple minutes of wondering what to do now it fell the rest of the way on it own. Very well placed. The next red oak was 50 yards away and the it fell right next to the first one, very well placed again. A good sized ash was next and there was no overcoming the amount of lean it had down hill so I dropped it down the ravine the safest direction, right between two other good trees. Then the last red oak which was the most rotten was back by the first one, it had a good lean towards the yard but the plan was to coax it towards the other two on the ground. It went exceptionally well and fell right where I was aiming again, shattering to pieces when it made contact with the ground. I took down another mystery tree by the pond, don't know what it was but with a cable on it she fell in the right place also. It was one of those days where I felt like I knew what I was doing, everything went just as planned and with my father in law spotting for me I cut the trees down and came home to my family intact. Thank the Lord for our freedom and abilities to do what we like to do when we like to do it! Now I've got a bunch of cleaning up to do. First one on the left, third one on the right Second one, looking back towards first and third oaks The ash was a big nice tree (aside from being mostly dead), I hated to put it down the hill like that but it was the safest direction by far. All these were in a 24-26 inch diameter range so I had to go on both sides with my 20 inch bar. I've ruined the home of a whole bunch of these stupid little things, and I don't feel a bit bad about it. Here's the mystery tree, I don't know what it is, feel free to let me know if you have an idea what it is by this picture.
Nice work! Yeah, you've got some bucking and hauling to do. The last one looks like some sort of hickory. Possibly. Do you have more pics of that mystery tree?
Nice job! It was a great day in Central Pennsylvania to do some cutting as well. I got a pile of Ash waiting to be split now. I tried loading a pic but keep getting an error message. I agree with Horkn....it looks like some kind of hickory.
Nice job! There’s some nice firewood there. I was hoping to drop a few trees this weekend but not in 25-30 mph winds. It’s drying things out at least.
Welcome to the club , Marvin! I think your gonna like it here ! What part of huntingdon are you from?
Looks like some of trees had to come down soon and glad you got them. Nice work, and on a slope too. I'd much rather do my cutting on flat ground! The bark on that tree surely reminds one of ironwood but probably is a hickory. Not sure on that though.
That looks like Hardhack/Ironwood to me. They usually don't get very big, but they make great firewood very dense.
Gotcha.....I kinda know that general area a bit. It's nice to know there is someone not too far away.
It's unfortunate, they were big beautiful trees. Several more right around those also that will be dying off probably pretty soon also, they are bigger than these.
That's what I'm thinking it might be, I've never messed with the stuff before so just not sure. It's very hard, has tight rings and is pretty knotty and twisty. I had a brand new rs chain on and it didnt exactly fly through that stump.
NICE work on the trees Boogeyman ! Did you have a rope in that oak you sent uphill? I’ve never cut on a slope before and I think I’d shaking in my boots worrying if that thing would start sliding back to me. I think I’d want to be uphill pulling it over. Man, it’s a rush though isn’t it? That’s my favorite part for sure, for a minute anyways until you realize now you have to clean it all up.
