Hey. billb3 slow down, smell the roses, your making me look bad. JK, great pics, way to get it cleaned up.
I have to get at it while the weather is decent and my back isn't bothering me. Darn snow/rain, I was really moving right along too.
Haven't hit any metal yet. Maybe I'll find it splitting it. I do have a big nail to pull out of that big log in the middle but I know it's there.
Didn't get much cutting done this weekend but the white oak pile of logs by the house is almost all cut into rounds. Couple of big trunk rounds that I could do with my 026pro/16 but I need a bigger saw as I've got more of these bigger oak trees. After some yard work cleaning up from driveway plowing and some greenhouse cleaning; A white oak winter blow down 3/10 mile into the woods that I started a while ago: I had to stop there. It started raining and used my first tank of gas up. The rounds roll down the hill when they drop off and they're now too heavy to pick up. Rolling them back up the hill got old quick. I'll have to try to pull the rest of that up a little bit to the top of the hill, hopefully with the tractor or winch it up. Then we'll see how I go about cutting the rest of the broken part off as it is 7 feet up. Maybe it will break and tear off when I force it over. damm, white oak is heavy. No decay in this, so nice splits. I'm gonna get it all, somehow, some way. The rest of it should probably come down too as I'll never get a nice cut on the wounded part so it heals over nice, it will just rot and decay. Some day, I'll have to keep an eye on it. 33 inch bh. The dark weathered rounds are some red maple from a year ago: I've got two maples and a small pine to clear from the trail to get the tractor to here and haul it out. Gaining on it.
Went into the swamp late in the afternoon Sunday when it was done raining to see what I could do with these red maple before the ferns come up. It's tangled up and wedged into a clump of trees pretty bad. There's two clumps of maple trees there. I'm tempted to give up on it but there's a fair amount of wood there and red maple seasons fairly quick. Water level is fairly high . Cleared the trail to get back here. I hate when that happens. Tried to lever it down but just digs in. There was a lot of easy stuff to get out of the way either from driving over or would get caught on the tractor ROPS like this: A pine tree to de-limb and slice up - no pic.
Lots of downed wood there to refill your stacks. If you can get to the snarl of maples, cut them in place and leave them for a few months. Hopefully the ground will dry up enough to get them out of there. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
There's a whole bunch of other maples down and/or leaning. These are near the edge of the swamp. Easier to get to and don't have pines mixed into the mess. In another three weeks or so the ferns will be hip height and it gets difficult to walk around. You have to see what you are stepping on every step.
you really have to be motivated to go work in that situation. When I was young, I didn't think twice about it. I had a saw and a wheelbarrow. Got it done! Now, I can't manage either one of them.
Yeah trying to get it before it rots. Have mostly red maple and pine here . The pine is easy to get to and the maple burns better.Lots of pucker factor cutting maple pressure points hung up with /between other trees. You pay taxes on worthless land you want to get something out of it even if you're really not supposed to. So maybe more stubborn than smart. Having a load of logs delivered really is so much easier. I consider it.
Got the maples in the swamp all free from all the hangups and all the pressure points relieved ready to be cut into rounds. Got the maple on the trail that speared the ground un-speared and on the ground. Of course, it started raining. A little bit of progress anyway. Kinda hoped the stump stood back up so the holly that's there would be pointing up instead of sideways but the stump didn't budge.
It was a 2 (two) tank of gas afternoon. De-limbed and diced the maple I got unhung up/onto the ground yesterday before it rained. and I'm down to cutting the 3 main trunks on the maples down in the swamp
I messed up. I was cutting easier to get to oak and I should have been out here cutting maple. I need wood for year 2 of a 3 year plan and oak won't be ready. I may have to do what mikeinma suggested and cut, cut , cut the maple in the swamp, haul out what I can and get it split and get back at it in the Fall/Winter. There's still time to season for year two with that plan. I can't be in here when the mosquitoes start, even if you drench yourself in Deet they're up you're nose and in your mouth/anyplace you haven't sprayed. I haven't seen any yet.
Another afternoon, another tank of gas. I ran out too, I'm pooped. It was still too warm for this. Just one tree trunk left: : Hauled out everything I could carry, it never looks like much in a heap: 11 were just too heavy, I'll have to noodle or split them to a carrying weight: There's three or four more rounds on that smaller tree trunk. Maybe tomorrow. It's supposed to cool off so this should get easier. I hope. Yeah, that's the ticket, easier.
