hey looking for some red spruce do any you guys live where it grows,want to make guitar top out of it thanks
The official tree of Nova Scotia ! Plenty up here but none of any size in the area that I cut all my firewood .
I got plenty of it, and it grows big, but man alive is it hard to get proper Red Spruce for guitar tops. Just so everyone knows, Red Spruce is ideal for guitar tops because of the way it resounds the sound inside, but it has to have no knots, VERY tight grain, yet be wide...so a big tree. The latter can be made up by grain matching and glue, BUT it also affects the sound. Its very difficult to find the right tree, and I am on the hunt myself. I have plenty of logs, just none that are veneer in the size that is required. I am on the hunt myself for some for a friend's guitar, yet I have not found any trees that match up. Here is a picture of me loading spruce logs, many of which are Red Spruce, though there are some White Spruce as well. White Spruce grows bigger, but cannot be used.
They normally use Sitka spruce for guitar tops. Good tight grain. Maybe someone from Alaska. Around here it is all Colorado blue spruce or the colorado green spruce. I do not see it up in mountains here.
Hers one my son is building we like the wide grain and also tight ,he glues book match tops together ,the main thing is it has to be quarter sawn for strength ,this one still has to be wet sanded and buffed,when it’s done I’ll post pictures
