Snapped my hatchet handle recently while making kindling. Dang shoulder season woes. Decided better of getting a HD TSC counter tool and ordered an x11. Had to make 50 bucks for free shipping, so added an x27. I have a lot of splits that are really too big for the 30 to burn nicely. I think I would rather have the x27 handy for those pieces as opposed to firing up the Husky 28 splitter. Not here yet, so no pics, which means didn't happen. It will and I will post follow up pics.
I think very highly of the x27 and you cannot beat their reputation or warranty. good choice. until I get my splitter done I will continue to split by hand. I have a few mauls and always reach for the fisk first. When I looked at them in stores I thought it can't work to sharp, tried buddies and been hooked since.
I only split wood for fun, I burn pellets, the Fiskars is a very good piece. I had my doubts but it works great, the hatchet to I think x15??? about a foot long.
Apparently I received a drone delivery from Amazon today. Stopped in for lunch and there was a long box with both pieces inside. Couldn't stop myself from splitting a garbage can full of oak kindling and then taking the 27 out to the wood pile. Not sure which was more impressive, the delivery or the axe. I see a work out coming.
Took the 27 to the pile again tonight. Stacked a pallet (46x54) load to about 5 1/2 foot in height. My prior math has yielded 5/8 of a cord per pallet. Split about 1/2 of that with the Fiskars, the other half was picked off the already split pile. I find that I can split very well with a shortened grip point. A bit more accurate with plenty of splitting power. Split Hickory, Cherry and White Oak. Cherry was, well,....................like cherry should be. Easy. The Hickory was easier than I thought it would be and the white oak just laughed at the idea of being split. That stuff was standing dead and is bone dry. A 10 inch diameter log with no knots took about 8 shots to make the first break. One thing that I need to get used to is the way the axe has a tendency to fly off in directions left or right of the impact when it blows through the log. Down right scary at times. I hit the handle squarely 2 more times tonight. That make 3 with no ill affects, but for my hand which is still throbbing. All in all I am more than pleased with the performance.
get yourself a biggish tractor tire. not only does it contain the splits, but you can really put some power into it and then the handle is stopped by the sidewall before the head ends up burying into the ground.
