Had a crappy work day. Nothing bad happened but didn't feel like I got anything done (because I didn't). Thankfully the city took down a dead ash and left behind a few large crotch pieces. Had to cut them short but still tough to split. Not that much wood but felt good after getting to use the saw, the axe and a workout!
Good you got that ash. Fortunately it doesn't look like it has gone bad at all so will be great burning. Looks like it was a yard tree too as some was no doubt hard to split. Is that also some cedar we see in the picture?
Yup a bit of cedar. I always try to keep a bit of softwoods to kickstart the fire if its getting bogged down. Yeah this was a yard tree. I have some straighter branches of the stuff, but it's still much twistier overall than ash you'd find in a forest. The knotty stuff was just a pain, so I had to cut into small pieces in order to bust them up. Have some uglies at the bottom of the pile.
My first Superintendent asked me, "what are you going to do after a really bad day of students not listening, talking back, nothing working right?" I said, "probably go home and split some wood with an axe 'til I feel better". He enjoyed that answer and we talked many times of many things. Wow, 1986, that was a while ago.
That's funny...it's amazing what splitting wood can do for the spirit. I'm at a computer all day. It doesn't generate the same satisfaction as working with your hands and breaking a sweat.
Glad I wasn’t the only one splitting a few after work. I took the maul to some locust rounds when I got to my lady’s house. Slowly we are working on that pile because I’ll have work on a nice day and then not so much light yet so have to do our best. Still felt good to swing at some straight grain rounds.
All be myself with the radio on, I find splitting wood by hand, to be very cathartic and relaxing, in a most violent way. Also, very rewarding with near instant gratification watching the pile of logs shrink and the pile of splits grow. A cold brew when done for the day, seems to taste even better. I did just that this evening. Just having an off day nothing bad happened. Hour outside was nice, I enjoy the fresh air! Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk
Kind of a slackazz here, I only split about a dozen pieces today. Had to purchase 2 face of wood this year, and by friends FIL splits em as if they're all going in his OWB. Needed to bring some in tonight, and wife has some issues lifting the large rounds/splits, so I chunked up a dozen or so into thirds so she can handle them easy. She keeps the home fires burnin while I'm at work, least I can do is make it easy on her.
