I’ve been looking around for a picnic table, wood of course. Some say for a really well used around 50+ish. Others nicely done maybe 2-3 c notes. Anyways I’m now thinking a great spring break project would be to build one. Little bit more than what I’m used to doing but willing to make it worthwhile. 7-8 foot long.

I’m asking if anyone has found pros and cons to building the table with separate benches or just all built in. I’m leaning to the one piece as the benches tend to tip over if you want to get out. If you have any plans that you worked from, send me links. I know there’s a bunch out there. Just like to hear thoughts.

I don’t have an opinion either way.,, Just replying to this thread so I can see what kind of picnic table related picture Midwinter can come up with....:bug:

Had this idea first. I guess I figured if anyone made one here they’d have some kind of experience but ive had it the other way just learned about separate benches and all that can be a slippery slope

Depends a lot on who is going to use the table. Any seniors or large people aren't going to like a table they have to lift their legs over the bench. Those tables that have the curved metal frames work out the best. They fold away easily for storage, or move easily if needed for an event. They don't rot out or have splinters.

I was thinking about making the ends be a bit larger than average but make sure that the weight is right.

It can be done but you have to get everyone to cooperate. Also the ones with the metal hoop base is so much easier to balance on the ground.

Here's one my buddy and I made if you have access to logs. Didn't take long and cheap to make.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

I’ve got some black locust logs this sounds cool!!! Haha I just dont have a mill so this’ll seem a little crazy especially with that kind of wood.

We did the cutting with my chainsaw mill. Just some Poplar another friend had laying around. It was a good learning experience. If it lasts a long time, great. If not, we got firewood! Lol.

Thought about getting one of those Alaskan mills. Sound like fun if one runs into straight trunks. The black locust might be great for the table tops. Won’t rot. But a mill would be awesome for more 2x3’s

They work really well for a nice hobby. A little trimming can do wonders. I mainly use mine for big slab work.

I got a 48" Granberg mill and currently have a 28" and 36" bar for my ms661 but looking into a longer bar.
