I love the wee stump cabine! I wonder what the room climate might be like - it sure smells good...fresh cut cedar!

 

A sawmill near me decided to upgrade their debarker, but it would have been an extra $10,000 to make it oversized, so the owner told his boys that, "we don't get big logs any more", so they saved $10,000 and went with the smaller debarker.

Bad move.

After installing it, as certain sized logs came in, they realized just how many big logs were actually coming into the sawmill afterall. So they went out and bought a Woodmizer sawmill for $12,000 to break the logs down into cants so they could fit into the new debarker. Not only did they spend more money, now they have to separate the logs, get a guy to run the sawmill, and move the big logs all around just to break them down.

Now I know this is Maine and not the size of these logs pictured, but it kind of shows the silly mindset of some sawmill owners today (and the guy is a great stand up guy, just never realized how many big logs were coming through his sawmill.

 

We cut an Ash many years ago that was 44 inches on the top; one of the biggest I have ever seen. Even then we had to lob 4 feet off the butt due to some rot. Anyway we hauled it to a company that made tool handles and the scaler just groaned. It seemed the sawmill had no upper sized limits so he had to take the log, but it meant cutting the log in half with a chainsaw first, a hard proposition for a log that size!

That is a rare photo as it has been claimed, not a lot were used in the woods due to the planked roads of the Spruce Division era.

I have always thought about fabricating an old Rat-Rod chain drive Kelly-Springfield truck, but will most likely die before that ever happens. I do have an old Model T Ford truck my Grandfather made into a double-transmission jitterbug, but lacks the chain drive that I love so much.
