There’s been a couple big maples down at a house on the main road my street is off. I went by this afternoon on a test drive after changing plugs in my truck, the homeowner was out wheeling rounds to the curb so I stopped, he told me take all I want. I went home (.75 miles), and got the Fiskars X27 ️ and sledge and wedges. I overfilled my little truck, close to 1/2 cord. Another guy came by and I helped him get some also. The bark doesn’t look like the silver maple we get around here, it could be Sugar Maple. It is not as dense as the similar size splits of red oak I brought home yesterday. Pics attached. Could be, we do have that around here. Pretty much every maple around here gets tapped for syrup. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Love it! And good on you for helping another potential hawdah! BTW, did you mention our FHC family to the other fella?
Excellent! Bought yourself some good vibes helping the other fella, too. I agree with CBVT - looks like red maple to me. Lower end of medium range on the btu chart, but dries fast and usually splits pretty easy.. though as a yardbird, you might have a fair bit of twist in it. I burned a bunch of it this winter especially, and never find myself cursing at it.
That’s hard maple there. Red has a distinct contrast between the heartwood and sapwood colors. With sugar it can be hard to tell the difference. Plus the bark has vertical furrows rather than the “shattered glass” look of red. Nice score!
They often grow together here with the sneaky poison ivy hiding under the larger creeper leaves. Both on a tree and on the ground.
Free wood always good !!!!!! That is hard maple (sugar maple) and the best part is its curbside this time of year no mud to deal with
