This was taken down in the neighborhood. Asked the owners about it. I was told it wasn’t very good wood because it was Swamp Maple. The owner said he would have kept it if it was good wood, because he also burns. My thought is free is free, plus it’s easily accessible and close to home. Even if it is some type of soft maple, it certainly isn’t the worst wood I could put in the stove. But I’m not sure I’ve cut a maple with a dark center like that. Anybody agree with swamp maple, or could it be something else? I’m in CT. Thanks!

Get off the internet and go back now with a saw. That's pignut hickory! I of course would not tell the other guy that though.

I thought it looked like hickory too. Thanks for the input!

    That's not swamp maple.
Swamp(red) maple is decent firewood if you ask me. Doesn't smell so great burning but hey, heat is heat.
Bark looks like norway maple but it has been a while since I cut one and I don't remember the heartwood being dark.
If the guys who cut hickory all day long recognize it as hickory then maybe it is.

Maybe the guy burned some silver maple once and wasn't impressed. Or rotten red maple.
I'd go grab it though if I needed wood cuz it sure doesn't look like willow.

Thanks for all the responses. I was able to take the smaller diameter logs that I could get onto the trailer. The larger diameter stuff will need to be cut up before I can move it. But I probably got about 1/3 of it. Hopefully the rest is still there tomorrow.

saewoody I would certainly thank him for that swamp maple. Tell him this will by your first time burning it and if it does okay you might be back for more!

It's not swamp maple. I've got lots and thats not it. Thick rings, I'm not sure what it is. I also have a lot of shag bark hickory and that's not it either.

That's why I said go now. Roadside hickory is the cocaine of the firewood world. It never makes it thru the night.

    Good score!

Here’s an update. Got the wood cut up, and split a few pieces. Figured I would see if these pics confirm or change people’s view on type of wood. Splits easy, so not sweetgum. Has a sort of sweet, but smelly scent. I’m leaning towards hickory. The grain doesn’t look like maple.

I believe you are correct. The story I got was that it dropped a very large branch, so the town took it down and found the base rotted.
