Well, my log guy came out today with my load of logs. I have plenty to cut around my farm, just don't have the time, so I bit the bullet and bought a load of logs...it is a time saver for sure and will easily get me 3 years ahead (maybe more). 90% White Oak and Shag-bark Hickory, only a couple of Ash and Maple logs. Gotta love it, the guy comes out in the middle of a snow storm...Good local guy and friend.
I’ve called around to my local sawmills and all I get is “we don’t do that” I’m like why not? How much does this tri-axle set you back by the way and what is the cordage amount? If you don’t mind me asking. Nice delivery!
I gave up $850 for the load. He guaranteed 24 face cord...if I don't get that he will make it up with splits at no charge...he is a great guy and really stands behind his work.
I wish I had room for a truck to unload. The only spot would put the log pile in a place that would get me divorced.
Yeah...lot of work ahead. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get it processed. Three of my friends said they would help spit and stack with me once I chunk it up...we have a simple system: help each other out, provide beer, and the BS flows naturally...
Nice looking load. If I remember correctly it takes me about a month to get a log load cut, split and stacked. That’s working steady at it, some evenings and most weekends. If it’s a full load the problem becomes that I get buried, first in chips and rounds then in splits so the efficiency takes a big hit. I also lack a machine to move things about, my only assistance is gravity and a yard that slopes. Wood gets delivered on the high side and the rounds get rolled. I can do a half load in less than half the time. You can probably get that bucked up in 2 days with a tractor to pull out the logs and move away the rounds.
I do have a FEL and it will be of great assistance. I normally just use the bucket to roll the logs off the top, just easier and quicker and safe as long as I don't bite off more than I should. I got a few friends that are going to help me out for a few days so I hope to really get the majority done fairly timely once the weather breaks. It was a dang storm when he delivered that load yesterday!...I loved it.
I have plenty of trees on the farm, but this is quicker for me and obviously easier...I love time in the woods, but time is in short supply between work and other commitments. Plus by time I get this processed this spring I will be well ahead of three years supply...a mile stone for me, then I can keep ahead by cutting on my own place as time permits and work gets better (I hope) ...there is no way right now that I could get in and out of my woods and get this volume of wood up between now and fall...this is the right decision for me, but not all...I am thrilled at getting three years ahead!
That's a beautiful sight! We did a couple loads like that our first year here, having had no time to scrounge. Having cut on a few piles like that, I learned that for me caution is paramount, but confidence is a close second. Working scared is almost as good a way to have an accident as working cocky.
