Cleaning up and burning today when I saw this on the burn pile. Ash, so some say, can be burned green. This picture is the top of a white ash that had been standing dead for 4 years before I cut it a couple of days ago. As you can see it is far from dry. A little later on both were bubbling. I would hate to put that in my catalytic stove!
Yeah, it sort of makes me cringe every time I hear it. Ash is so dry you can burn it right away! Okay.... We burned just a little ash this winter from what we cut last spring at the GTG. That was all dead ash. It still had sap in it.
I burn and cut tons of ash here and it’s very deceiving for sure. I think once split it dries fairly quick compared to some woods. Even the standing dead stuff that seems dry and has that bowling pin/ baseball bat sound to it that some think is dry still has tons of juice. Around here the scary part has been how they are failing. Look fine at first glance then right at the ground the break off!
Ash dead for years! Its not firewood til its cut split stacked and seasoned. Thanks for making the point Ralphie Boy
Yeah, I always laugh inside a bit when someone selling wood says oh it's been down for years, it's good to burn. Well not if it ain't split!
Is that sap or rain water trapped under the loosened bark ? What's the center of the round test with a MM ?
Not rain water, sap for sure. I should have taken another picture a few minutes later. Noth pieces were foaming like they had rabies!
It's a terrible thing I know, but I have so many ash dead ash trees I quit processing the smaller limbs.
The center has a good crack(check) in it. Willing to bet it was fairly dry, but without a mm we will never know.
