Dang, I went 100% wood heat in late jan and have been ever since. Getting on the 3 year plan aint easy. I'm gonna have to make a trek down to my 2019 pile soon. Lows are 20's here all week and its snowing now. ugh.
That's part of wood burning unfortunately. Weather changes, and our burning habits change with it. Many of us got into next years wood. The one thing I've learned is that when you think you have enough wood for a year, add 20% more to it. If you burn it, great. If you dont, you are that much further ahead for the next year.
CHeath, all part of the game, December up here was ridiculous. Most of the month was 20 to 30 below zero and people were just running out. The good news is with the storms, there is plenty of to cut
When first starting out full time burning many run into this problem. But soon you'll be on the 3 year plan but beware, keep in mind how much you've burned since you went 100% and use that as a guide on how much you need to put up. Hopefully you'll get to the point like us. We simply do not know what is this year's wood and next years wood and so on and so forth. We just use the oldest wood first then move to the next pile, etc. To get a count, we just know how much wood we generally burn and then take how much wood we have on hand and divide. Ah ha! 4-5 years on hand is nice!
Spot on. I was lucky when we first started in that my brother said we'd use about 5 cord/year. That was just about perfect, at the time and held true for a few years. So, after a couple years, I got to the point where I began putting up a bit more to use than that and I've followed that plan every year since. Our situation has changed recently and we now burn more nat. gas, so the 2 years worth I had is now more like 3-4-5 years worth, depending how lazy I get. The new stove burns a bit less wood too, so that helps. Shed holds about 6 cord (maybe a hair more), and it's always full before the snow flies. Wait a minute......NC gets cold? Who knew.
HA! yes, for the first time on 45 years I was lucky to see what 4 degrees felt like. Well, 11 below with wind but I didn't want much of it.
Same here in Dakota, burned way more this year than ever, with no end in sight. Should be on shoulder wood and part time (night and morning) burns by now, but still going 24/7. I can't believe I'm saying this but... I'm about ready to be done burning for the season! Now if I had more time to CSS, that's another story!
I'm into next year's wood too. Three years ago I was 4 or 5 years ahead based on two cords a year. Plus some shoulder stock. I'm gonna hafta change to three cords a year for estimate purposes and get my arse in gear.
You and me both. It looks like I went through 2 cords since December so I’m gonna go with 4 per year. A part of me doesn’t feel like that is possible but my woods gone Lmao!!!
