I know you have some new splitting hardware but my offer on the splitter still stands. It’s just sitting in the garage collecting dust at the moment...
Welcome SelectiveHarvest , You're gonna like it here, I guarantee it-We like pics, dogs, beer and spending your money on accoutrements to enhance your addiction...er, I meant hoard....Lots of good folks here Nice to meet you!
Thanks, but I'd be scared to use it! Also, I love splitting, it's such good exercise. Mwalsh9152 might think about renting or borrowing one for his maple. That's not much fun to hand split, tends to have a twist to it.
To me I’d be more scared of getting an axe to the shin than getting hurt with the splitter. I respect you for doing it by hand. Mwalsh9152 i have a splitter that needs excersize if it will help you get your wood in order.
The sharp bits are a yard away when in motion. I would like to see a splitter in action someday, I've just seen the banged-up fingers they seem to dole out.
Nice score NH! Gotta love logs that are the perfect size like those are. Show us your finished hoard when your done... Very motivational. I gotta get out cutting wood....
That is a beautiful score. Good thing you had to go to the hardware. Finding that oak is a big bonus.
Be not afraid of banged-up fingers or getting injured. It is actually difficult to hurt yourself with a hydraulic splitter. Here is a video for you to watch in case you haven't seen it already. Splitting elm.
For sure anyone can get hurt on some of the safest things... Most of us have seen dumb "accidents." I still laugh remembering when I was quite young and my older sister was dating a fellow who went into the army and became a parachute jumper. On furlough, he jumped off a 3' high porch and broke his leg. Stranger things have happened.
Like Dennis says, it truly is difficult to get hurt running a splitter. You definitely have more chance of getting hurt splitting with an axe or maul than with hydraulics. All those muscles to have to stress to get the axe swinging, then the splits that can fly. A hydraulic splitter is really just about watching what you are doing, and never putting your hands in the wrong spots.
We can arrange for you to come up this way, it's not too far. I will be doing a lot of splitting over the next couple of months. I'll be glad to show you! And it would be nice to see you again.
Vertical or horizontal, hydro splitting is way safer than with an axe. The only thing you need to do is better put your hands near pinch points. Simple. That's the same vertical and horizontal splitting. I grew up axe and maul splitting. I've been burning wood my entire life. We only got a hydraulic splitter about 20 years ago. So I've done a lot of both hand and hydro splitting.
Same here, I only got my splitter about 5 years ago, I occasionally used borrowed machines before that. I couldn't have built up my 3 year supply without it. I look back now and can't believe I found time to do it all by hand, but I did.
